Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi everyone I now have high speed internet finally so now I can keep up. I got a 5 gallon waterer so I don't have to fill it so much. Will I still need a water warmer? I have a heat lamp that comes on at 35 do you think that is enough to not freeze, if I put it right under the lamp?

Heres a pic of my hubby:

Dave VS chainsaw the saw won

I have not used the heat lamp but have read of some that do and it works well,

Came back from the Ohio Nationals with this little 5 month old mottled splash bantam cochin guy (girl?) as a free extra to the blue mottled cochin pullet I got from Mandy at The Cochin Coop. She thinks it is a cockeral because of his pointed male feathers, but its comb is very small so honestly I am not sure if it is a he or she. It is very small, and definitely pet quality, but pretty cute and fluffy. I was thinking I would keep him and let him grow out, but I don't think it would be a good choice to have him in my breeding program if I am wanting to show. I gave it a sink bath, dusted bedding with Sevin dust, and applied Ivermectin last night just to be safe, but did not notice any crawlies. Looking to find a new home for he/she if anyone is interested!

I ended up not washing chickens yesterday. I went to start and discovered mites on one I wanted to wash. I decided to medicate and check everyone instead. It amazes me how 4 birds have a lot 6 birds had some and I didn't find any on anyone else. But since I caught them I medicated all. I know it has to do with how much they are outside and dusting.

I'm not excited by the rain today but since my son is hunting Thursday and Friday he has to finish his weeks school work early and the rain will make that easier. I have a job interview tomorrow that I'm not sure about. One of those things I want but am just not sure about. I haven't worked since we moved here two years ago and before that it was part time set to my schedule. So the truth is that I'm just spoiled and like to have a flexible schedule and that would change.

How far are you exactly? My son's 4-H leader is looking for a bantam cochin roo. She wanted one of our little Sizzles but he won't roost and needs more attention than normal.
I'm just north of Grand Rapids in Rockford. Honestly I think this guy is going to need a bit of attention as well. He looks big but it is all fluff and he basically has a little serama sized body under there and I imagine other chickens will like to pick on him/her.

Good Morning! It's gloomy and raining. Sure did enjoy the weekend's weather. Got all my windows washed inside and out. I used a "miracle" cloth I bought at a craft fair. It's microfiber. It worked great. No cleaners and paper towels. Just one cloth and that was it. Did all the windows in record time.

Does anyone have a chinchilla as a pet? My DIL wants to get a pet for the girls, and was wondering how they do as pets. Any feedback welcomed.

First, how old are the girls?

Chinchillas, in my opinion, are not good pets. They are very sensitive and high maintenance. Also, they are not cuddly pets, and do not like getting handled. Even ones who have been handled from a very young age by a devoted breeder. And if you think other animals chew, then you haven't met a chinchilla. My former housemate, his chinchilla chewed EVERYTHING.

Also, they can teleport. Which greatly assists with the chewing. A list of things ruined include a window air conditioner, countless sets of headphones, books, socks, chairs, window edges, cords, and basically anything you wanted intact. Normy did make a great paper shredder, so when anyone got credit card offers in the mail, we gave it to the chinchilla. He reduced those letters to confetti in minutes.

I'm serious. Not a pet I'd recommend unless you can chinchilla proof an entire room. They do need a lot of exercise, and even with a big cage, they should get 'outside' time.
