Brethren, I'm glad the surgery aspect is done for him and that it went well. Were they able to put all the fractures back in place or did they have to use any replacements?

Well, this 2nd surgery is done, yes. But we are still looking at least one more, if not two. Next week's appointment will tell us more definitely if the skin is holding up. If not, the plastic surgeon will be doing a flap in order to put good skin in place to hold stitches and prevent further chance of infection. Then there is the more than likely surgery to remove all of the screws and plate once it's fairly healed. If the metal is causing too much discomfort, they will remove it then. Imagine sitting on a cold metal seat in the winter. Metal is very conductive and will transfer the cold into the joint.
The tib and fib are lined up well, as is the outside (plate side) of the ankle. The inside with the one long screw has so many fractures they couldn't count them all. So chances are that there are pieces not in the exact place, but close. The pieces of bone should knit together though, at least that is what they are hoping. But no, they did not use any replacements.

Thank you for all the well wishes and prayers for him (and me). Off to take care of the animals, 10 hour shift at work, and back to the animals this evening. Really nice outside right now. Hope it stays that way. Enjoy it!

Since today is supposed to be warm it will be chicken bath day. I have a couple that are filthy and this way it won't be a big shock to their system to go from the house back to the coop when they are dry.

37 Years for the Edmund Fitzgerald.... and my sister, they happened the same night. We have a birthday party to go to today. So hopefully I can get baths done first and they can dry while we are gone.

We were out visiting my sister and her family yesterday and I thought to take a picture of her chicken "run", more like chicken heaven. This came about after one wandered into the tall corn field and was killed and a guinea ran off for a week. Pretty ambitious. There's garden going in for them (far left) and there's also a gate to the veggie garden (on the far right) for the guineas and off-season foraging for the chickens. There's an owl with a rotating head on the post just right of center too. Some LUCKY birds! The picture is four photos stitched together, rather hastily, I apologize (in defense of my BIL who built it). The fence pieces are not so crooked in actuality, just the perspective. He also refurbished that coop. It was trash when they moved in there, caved roof, no windows, rotted boards. He rebuilt the windows by hand (and then made me a few as well All new roof with metal sheeting, new paint. We had a painting party for it actually. Luuuuuuuuuuuucky chickens...

Have a good day all, Grand kids will be up in a few hrs. Cat just came in and needs some loven, caring for the neighbors dog as they had an out of town emergency,poor Minx(cat) does not like having DOGS in her house,She loved the old 2 as they were here before her. Se likes big dogs more then small, Coco isn't to bad as she lives with 3 cats and most likely "smells" OK, she is a small med. sized dog. VERY well behaved doesn't even chase the chickens.

Need to get a plant in the ground before it freezes in the pot, and there are a couple hens that could use a put wash befor it gets too cold, would like to get the basement throw washed and on the line too before it gets too cold to dry

BFM, congratulations

Bretheren, that is good news that the joint was undamaged, bones heal well, the soft tissue of joints not so much. I am sure that his skin was really squeezed between the original injury and the swelling afterwards. It is too bad they had to put a cast over it. Keeping my fingers crossed.

farmerboy, pumpkins last longest if kept someplace cool but not freezing, put them on a bed of straw and check them weekly for bad spots.

My chickens will eat literally anything with any resemblance to food or any growing thing, plant or otherwise. I am afraid they would eat me if I ever keeled over in there.
