Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Bad storm here last night. Lightening strikes and loss of power. But that is fairly common. Today, during dead calm, a tree broke and fell on the new coop. No harm was done and I have some more firewood, once I cut it.

The aftermath of the storm is a drastic drop in temperature that is supposed to last for a few days. So I closed the windows of the coop

I've been brooding some chicks out there and have a heat lamp for them. That brings me to my point...

As we move in to the cool/cold season, people often want to heat their coops. Unless very young, your chickens really don't need any extra heat. Even in the Michigan cold. But if you decide to have any heat source and/or lights in your coop, please make sure that the fixtures are doubly secure. Another good idea is to have a fire extinguisher readily available at hand. Be prepared just in case.

This has been a PSA.

PDZ question- I started using pdz on/ in my poop board a couple of months ago. When I am cleaning up I am noticing a lot of very small flies? in the pdz. Is this normal? Also the pdz is diminishing each time I clean should I just add more to it or do clean out the remaining and put all new pdz in the tray?

Thanks!

We had some rather violent storms here too, lots of lighting and rain, garage flooded two days in a row...glad I left pump set up after first day and didn't bother with wet vac until after second flood. the cooling weather is sooooo nice. More heat coming next week but<shrugs>

Hard to say about the flies.....lots of different kinds of 'flies'.
Are you sifting out poops every day?
I just add more PDZ when it gets too thin, keeping it to about 1/8-1/4" deep.

Aart- I sift about every second or third day at the most. The flies/ gnats are small and plentiful. I didn’t notice them when I had just the roost but I do now. . Thanks for the response just adding will save a few bucks.

Might want to sift daily in the summer.
How small is the mesh you're sifting with?
I use a pretty fine mesh basket, gets most of it out.
