Has anyone had this happen?

Coop has been clean and dry all winter. Mostly wood shavings on the floor for litter.
Checked on the birds this morning and notice a slight ammonia smell. Since it was a nice day, I opened all of the windows for ventilation.
So I get home this evening from work, check the girls and the ammonia smell is darn-near over whelming. It's dark and I can't do much about it, except to leave the windows open for fresh air.

I've never had that happen before. I'm guessing that the warm temps today thawed out some frozen litter and released the trapped gas. I'll be deep cleaning the coop come morning. I feel bad for the hens that I lapsed in good animal husbandry. :he

So we cracked and got chickens tonight. didn't have much luck with finding any Lavender Orpingtons like I wanted, but we've both got chickies on the brain and opted not to wait any longer. Ended up with some Wyandottes, 2 silverlaced, and 2 goldenlaced. Figure they'll add some color to the flock and get along with everybody.

Might need more protected ventilation for winter when you don't want the windows open.
..or get some poop boards set up wit PDZ, getting rid of the night poops daily helps immensely with ammonia build up.

I've been keeping up with the cleaning of the coop and run. Almost every day I go out and scoop out the poop in coop, and been scraping the poop in the run. So, no problems with smell.
It was such a beautiful morning yesterday. Found things to do just to stay out and enjoy the sunshine and listening to the robins sing. But the early evening sure brought on strong storms! Hope everyone survived! Next few days will be colder. Can't wait for the warm weather to come and STAY!

We had several tornado warnings last night. there was a small cell that came up through Hillsdale Brooklyn, my house, Chelsea area, luckily it didn't form anything, but the other one did hit up near Durand. I picked up hubby from DTW & and stopped at work to get the other car. The rain that followed was pretty heavy too.

Same here!

We had a couple of lines of thunderstorms come thru, most went north of here...some heavy rain and wind. They were talking large hail and tornadoes possible.
