Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hellos Michigander's - past, current, & transplants.

In the mobile version of BYC I have not found the search function yet..... I've not stopped hunting but, here's my question:
Anyone one here remember this acronym G.L.F.N. from the early to late 90's in SW Michigan? Hint #1(It's a geeky computer fun memory for me)
Hint #2 I was a Mod there with this very same ID

Whoops that may have been a gimme.... (Shrugs)

I'm not in the mitten anymore. And a wink/shout out to the UP'pers too! Y'all been in the news a few times this year for cool history that's washed ashore or been discovered in Lake Superior.
B4N. (by for now)

Sheesh! What a morning. Jeep needs a new wheel bearing and upper control arm. I don't have a press for the arm so it has to go in to the shop. I'm flat broke even though yesterday was pay day. At least the mechanic will let me pay in a couple of installments. I shouldn't drive the car until it is fixed but I have to work and it's the only transportation I have right now.

Beautiful day here, sunny and warm (40's). Chickens are out so I can get some coop cleaning done without them being on the way.

Happy Solstice everyone.

Nice and sunny and 'warm' on these shortest days of the year.
Wishing a Blessed Solstice to Everyone!

So mote it be.

According to Weather Underground for my area, today had 10 hrs. 0 min of visible light. Length of day was 8 hrs., 54 min.
This kind of debunks the old wives tale that chickens need 16 hours of light to produce eggs.

Well, pullets are a bit different.
I use dateandtime.info...funny that this time around today and tomorrows day length are the same....regardless, soon days will slowly start getting longer.
The clear sunny skies sure help.

I used that site for an experiment I did in grad school. Compared egg production from various sites north of the equator and the amount of natural daylight those sites received. Gathered a ton of useless data. Basically a hen will lay according to her own schedule.

Hard to get good data about laying, you'd need huge numbers of birds in identical conditions.
Duration of light as well as if it's increasing or decreasing have an affect...
...but there is certainly no finite formula for light and laying.
I'd love to get just one frickin' egg....been 17 days since the last one.
30wo pullets are holding out.
