Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I have a backyard flock in Grand Rapids MI. This spring we got four chicks and two ended up being roosters. I found a home for the two roosters yesterday! Now I am on the hunt for two or egg laying hens. Anyone out there have two they can spare? or where I could find some?

Thanks!
David
Hi David ~ I am also in Grand Rapids and glad to have another local chicken parent!

Welcome David!

I have a chicken, an EE hen, that seems to be having some neurological problems. She's 2-3 years old. She puts her head down and walks backwards quite a bit. Maybe problems with depth perception, also. Don't know if she got pecked on the head too often, or what is going on. Eating and pooping ok.
What a beautiful day this is! Got all my flower beds put to bed, so not much to do. Going to wait for these nice days to pass before we put up the tarps around the run. I have a roof, so loving that! Chickens can come out all winter.

Hope you enjoy these next few warmer days!!

Depends on where the windows are....hopefully you have protected ventilation up high that an stay open all winter.
Post pics of your coop and we can help you figure it out.
You can post it here....or start new thread, depending on how much feedback you want.
Hi @aart - I’m looking at your roosting bars in your coop and outside of the nesting boxes. Question....what is the height of your roosts above the PB? Also, it looks like the roosts outside of the nest boxes are 8 inches from the boxes. Is there a proper height or distance that is best?

My girls share the same nest box and the plan is to have a 48”x16”x16”h. I was planning to have 4 boxes with separators available.

the exterior of my coop is constructed and the windows are positioned in a way that one of The roost/PB will be in front of one of the windows. Venting will be open in the rafters so I will have that ventilation plus the windows.

I’m sure I will have more questions as we get closer. Thanks!

Wow, that sucker is BIG!! Nice!
What's with the gaps down low?
Will it have large(12-18") roof overhangs?

Question....what is the height of your roosts above the PB?
About 8". PB is about 33" from floor and 2' deep.

Also, it looks like the roosts outside of the nest boxes are 8 inches from the boxes. Is there a proper height or distance that is best?
Ehhhh, can't remember how/why I picked 8", but it works well.

I put nests 2' from floor for my convenience, then roosts are higher also at a convenient height for me to clean and also grab birds off roost for exams.

Here's some tips about heights:
