Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!! Most of my family will be coming. Except for son in Chicago. I'll have 17 folks to feed! Nothing like having the family together.
We are also looking forward to spending time with family. Happy Thanksgiving!

Here is a photo I took on October 31st in Spirit Spring Sanctuary. Do any of you ever go there? It's a nice place to spend time at.

Raz, get a hi/lo thermometer at a hardware store, and put it in on the top shelf (the warmest spot in the fridge). It should read not more than 40 degrees, with 37 being ideal. If it is colder than that, it wastes energy and foods at the bottom can freeze, which makes them less nutritious and affects taste and texture.

The county gave me a new fridge in spring as part of the programme they have for weatherization and energy efficiency. The old fridge was coal fired and they hauled it away.

A very busy day here today. On the phone with doctor offices scheduling appointments. Looks like the next 2 weeks are going to be hectic. The TEE is scheduled for Dec. 3 and I have to line up a driver (baby-sitter) because they will put me completely under. They won't allow a ride service , bus, or taxi. It has to be someone who sits in the lobby for the whole thing.

I finally got an appointment with an ortho doc. About damn time. My knee is killing me today. It looks as bad as it hurts,

On the upside, I got a boatload of wood cut today. Not split yet but everything I cut today is already seasoned and can be burned this season. I'll split and stack it tomorrow if the rain and snow hold off.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving!
We are having friends over, all vaccinated, for turkey and stuff. Family, not all vaccinated, is doing their thing separately. Not great, but here we are.
No sign of that hawk, but the flock is still going to be in, and are all doing fine.
Colder tomorrow, but indoor activity all day anyhow. And the second jar of lard out of the frig is dated 'best by 2017'. ??? It might be fine, or not. Opiniosn?

I'd make soap with that lard. I regularly eat many kinds of food past its best buy and use by dates but not fat. Many foods just lose some of their nutritional value but fat goes rancid. Even worse, when it does, it is damaging before the rancidity is detectable.

Unless, it was stored in such a way that greatly slows the rate it goes rancid (not just the refrigerator). Maybe then. I'd still probably make soap with it instead - it just isn't worth the risk especially given the cost of replacing it.
