Lovelies! How is everyone holding on with the cold getting stronger each day?
It was cold for sure this morning. It was 19 when I went out but the coop was 27. Got the camping llights I got in the run and it looked so cozy.


Here is my shame girl. She knows she is a mess. But it is my fault for putting the dang petroleum jelly/vaseline on her comb.

And yes Raz, the white did not stay long anywhere in the coop,



No matter what she is so lovable. She might get a broken feet for sure. She walks right next to my boots, first to peck at the snow when I go in and second to squat for me to pick her up. She is very loving. Not like my original Phoebe. I named her P2.


By the way, that tarpis in there because the wind brings water and snow through there. Too lat ein the game to re-do the roof from there to the door. Apparently it was not enough into the other slide of roof so there is a small gap between the 2 panels.

Anyways, around 10am there was a ray of sun. So , I cleaned some of the snow, put some straw by the icy door and a few came out to get the cold grass as new diet,



Right after 20 minutes, I took themback so they were not out for too long.

Thick, waterproof stuff coating delicate skin....Does anyone know why it doesn't work

It can help keep our skin moist by preventing moisture loss,
but it won't prevent moisture from condensing on the comb/wattles.
It can gather dirt, which may hold more moisture against the skin.
If it is applied thickly, they'll try to get it off by rubbing or scratching.

Someone posted about using it on some birds and not on others, they all got bit.

Also, rubbing cold body parts is not helpful, if done when frostbite is actually starting to happen.

Definitely keep hands off, before and especially after.


IME, frostbite is pretty much impossible to avoid,
lots of ventilation, sealed waterer...and they go out and rub their wattles on the snow banks,
but I've seen seriously bitten combs and wattles heal up just fine on their own.

@aart I think I read somewhere that some people cut the crowns. Is that real or a falacy I read on line? I tried the peepers and it is horrible to put on. I would imagine it will feel like those nose rings some people use. Like a stuck piece of dirt there at all times,lol

Some do trim off large combs, it's called dubbing.
Not a common backyard practice.

My rooster got frostbit on his comb and wattles last winter. I imagine he might get some again this year. None of the girls had issues.

Got my booster shot yesterday. It affected me worse than either of the first two shots. Same with hubby. Not just the sore arm, but last night I had chills. This morning I'm feeling a bit better, but not great. There is (another) nap in my future today.

I'm trying a very light application of "working hands" on my girls' combs. It's made to repel and protect from moisture. It helps me, because I wash my hands a hundred times a day. So far, so good. It's been 3 days and their combs look good

Sorry to hear that . We got that booster on the 29th and we just had sore arms but many had reported chills or slight fever.
