We seldom see deer in my area, there is too much cedar swamps and rocky ground - not much food for them in the summer. Until this last summer, when I looked out my back window to see a buck in velvet munching up my Hosta 
I ran out the back door letting out something between a screech and a bellow which chased him off, although he came back later and finished off the big-leaf blue Hosta. I got hold of some varmint spray and that was the last damage, but it will take my plants a few years to recover, I'm sure. Good thing Hosta are so resilient.
Myrtle will survive anything. Like roaches.
