Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Notice there's no vitamin/ mineral mix in this recipe. Another Facebook find, not so hot.
And then, $2.50 per pound, at least 80% water. Compare to $2.00 per pound, 10% water, in a complete balanced dry food.
Recipies from nutritionist are best by far, if home made is that important.

Tractor thrower worked without a hitch! :yesss:
Snow was deep tho almost over the auger housing so took multiple extra runs. I must say tho, my lessons learned over the years have honed my techniques to make for much better/easier results.
Realized after all was done cleaning off the rig and I was shoveling up the last of it that I had an egg in my coat pocket, not broken or even cracked! :gig

Now the driveway is clear I can get out of here, tho I really have no reason to it's nice to know I can.

Rose, I wonder if there is some ingredients missing in that diet. It appears be unbalanced for primary long term feeding, but maybe could be a supplement to a balanced diet. As Mary says, there is no mineral supplementation, and the only source of calcium I see is the spinach/Kale - but when raw these vegetable have oxalate which interferes with calcium absorption. And is there enough to balance out the phosphorus levels in this diet? What about other micronutrients? I would be interested if the person who recommended it made the effort to have a professional nutrient evaluation done. If not, then there is no way to tell if it is properly formulated.

If you live near a lake then it's possible there is sulfur bacteria present from decaying organics. Digging the well deeper prob won't solve it. Firstly, test for well contamination, especially if the sulfur smell is intermittent, and treat it if it is.
Look into a 2 or 3-stage whole house filtration system with filters for sediment, iron ($$) and bacteria.
I have a 90 ft well in my rocky outcrop land. There is lots of swamp land, too so my concern was 1. Bacteria and 2. The visible iron sediment. We had sulfur smell but the water tested negative for bacteria, so the iron and natural hydrogen sulfide was the cause. DH built a 2-stage big canister system and installed on the main water line after the well tank. We use two 5 micron filters in parallel. Our pressure without filtration was very high 20g/min, with filtration still excellent at 15g/min.
Water is crystal clear, no odor, no iron taste at all. Our appliances, sinks, toilets have no rust staining and minimal calcium buildup after 1 yr so far. We change first filter about every six month..heavy use, too. Best thing we ever did! Far left filter is 2nd in line and in use for a year now.
Your situation may be different being near a lake but 5 microns will give you clean water. For drinking water FROM the lake I recommend 0.2-0.5 micron.
Our set up DIY, cost less that $100 materials, 10pk 4x20, 5micron filters about $60.
Nice! I just wonder where I can place it. I have no clue as to where the water comes to the hourse from and how it is routed all around. I will have to get rid of fears and when warm get in the crawling space, yuck! to see where is everything coming from and going.
I have no clue about the well. There is no information about it at all in the house papers. The old man did mentioned that he had to re-dig it. But he did had botteld water laying around as I remember. Nobody mentioned anything about bottled water. I just smell it and tasted it and said, heck no!
I am saving your post because I have no clue as to what microns are and sure sounds like a course word in Spanish, lol

Dang! I slept most of the day. BP at 122 at 822am while sitting reading Scripture. Then got dizzy and checked it again and iy was 145. WTH! out of nothing it just went up. Girls are tucked for the night. They were snoozing by 6pm and the door closed at 615pm. Collected 6 eggs today out of 11 hens. Not bad.
Would my egg diet be giving me the HBP? I am not eating much because I am sleeping a lot. Not that I sleep all night but I get up and after 2 or 3 hours, I go back to bed for another 3 or 4 hours. I hate, well, dislike this. This is no life at all.

Pet foods are probably safer than the food you buy to eat yourself. Recalls often involve a company's quality testing, not always due to pets that get sick. From what I can see there were 15 recalls in 2021, and 10 recalls in 2020. Many of the most serious recalls involved products that contained corn which was contaminated with a mold called aflatoxin, or bacterial contamination of raw foods. It is extremely rare for there to be a recall of the better quality national brand companies.
It happens far less frequently then people get sick from human foods from stores or restaurants, or cooked at home.

This recipe is from a vet tech that's very into fresh dog food. This is one of her more simple version. Says its budget friendly. She has recipes that have a lot of ingredients, like hearts and livers....

3 lbs. (48 oz.) Ground chicken/turkey
2 lbs. (32 oz.) Beef liver (can substitute chicken/turkey liver if desired)
2 cans (16 oz.) Tuna
2 bags (24 oz.) Frozen kale/spinach
23 oz. Unsweetened applesauce
2 bags (20 oz.) Frozen cubed sweet potato/butternut squash
1 bag (12 oz.) Frozen riced cauliflower
16 oz. Flaxseed meal.
Yields approximately 12 pounds of food at $2.50 per pound or $1.20/day for a dog fed 1/2 cup twice a day.

Damn. That is way better than the food I eat.

Well folks, I lied to you the other day. My Meijer does have beef suet for sale. I asked the department leader about it. It's not there every day but most days we have it. It is considered a "specialty" item so it doesn't always stock in the same place. But I did find it and bought 2 packages of it at $2.99/lb. I'll put some out tomorrow and hope to draw in more pileated woodies.

I had another bout of insomnia last night so I was able to see that the air temp at 3am was minus 6. By 9 it was up to minus 1. Not even the ducks wanted to come out of the coop so I put the water founts in the coop and went to work. Temp in the coop was 14 degrees when I left. I didn't get home until 5:30 so first thing I did was take fresh founts to the coop. Birds were all calm and not one made a rush to the fresh water. The 2 founts from the morning still had some liquid water in them so I guess they were all fine through the day. Coop was 27 and outside air was 19. All was good.
