Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

We got about 3" of very heavy wet snow today. At one point, it was postcard pretty, looking out the window. Big, fat, puffy flakes.

I put a polycarbonate roof on half of my run last summer (83% light transmission). The other half got covered with a (cheap) tarp. I'm thinking I want to replace the tarp with metal. Then they'll have a shady part and a filtered sunlight part to the run.

You can get plastic roofing panels that are opaque for shade, they are quite a bit lighter in weight than metal panels. Less expensive too I'm guessing, but it's been quite a few years since I had to buy any
We have some metal roofing panels, so that's why I was talking about using them. Probably anything I do for a roof will be out of material I can scavenge or that we have.

So I'm back from the Cleveland Clinic, where Hubby had open heart surgery last Monday. he's doing great, I'm really tired. Heart attacks are NO FUN! He's going to be in in-patient rehab for a week or two down there next.
This is the place to go, BTW. Wonderful. Best to avoid the whole experience though.
Avian influenza has me really spooked this year. All the chickens are inside, nobody will be free ranging at all. We have so many wild geese here, and this year I'm really not happy to see them.
More later...

You didn't know? Up here in the northern parts of Michigan the Mosquito is known as the Michigan State Bird, lol😂🤣, not really, but it is a very real late summer and fall saying!! We have a non toxic spray that we use on our yard about once a month or three and it works very good!
May I ask what spray you use? We have a spot up north on Beaver Island and at times the mosquitos make it unusable.

Good for you. I love it when people use materials on hand or what they can scrounge. I built my coop out of salvaged materials. Even the windows were reclaimed. The roof trusses, decking, and shingles were left overs from when I built the garage.

I'm new to Lansing, just moved from Indiana. I used to get materials from craigslist, but I don't see much listed up here, are there any MI oriented places to get reclaimed/free/used materials?

Fingers crossed that his recovery is swift.
My first open heart was done at the Frankle Centre at U of M. A BYC friend took me in and stayed for the entire procedure. Long day for her, some 16 - 18 hours that I was on the table. I went in on a Monday and was back home Sunday evening. My second open heart was done in Bay City. I drove myself there on Monday morning and drove back home on Friday afternoon. Open heart surgery is almost an out-patient thing nowadays. LOL

This whole AI thing has a lot of people worried. It reminds me of the same scare a few years back. I think that was the first time that Chicken Stock was canceled. It turned out that the crisis was no where close to the dire warnings from the state. I'm not going to let this latest scare spook me. Swans and geese have begun to return to my area. I'll be watching for them to see if they fly over my house. Usually they don't fly directly overhead. With the dense tree cover I have, I doubt that any airborne poop even hits the ground. But I'll be keeping an eye to the sky.

If you do Face Book, you can try their market place feature. There is a Habitat for Humanity resale store in Lapeer. Take I-69 to the Lapeer exit. The store is just north of town. I don't know if the Lansing area has one or not. There are several on this thread who live close to you and I'm sure they know better than I.

Welcome to the Michigan thread. Be sure to check out our annual Chicken Stock event in June.
