Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

We are still thawing out from this weeks ice storm. An entire substation that feeds a large area near me was out of commission. Several neighbors still without power. Trees still falling from the freeze, melt, freeze cycles. I wonder if flowing sap makes them prone to breakage with added weight from ice and sap. Thoughts??
My generator did not kick on for some unknown reason when we lost power but thankfully our power was restored after 8 hrs. This has me concerned for when baby chicks arrive in 3 weeks, so I went out and bought a case of hand warmers.
I’m hoping that is the end of freezing rain here..it’s just not that common for us to get 1/2 inch ice storms in the northern UP.
Thankfully it’s sunny and not too breezy today.

Just heard on the radio that AI was found in several bird species in Michigan. Canada geese, tundra swan, snowy owl, and a few others that I didn't catch.

And if that news isn't depressing enough then you'll love the snow forecast for this weekend.

Anybody have some good news? I need a pick-me-up.

Is there a possibilty that the whole wild bird population that can get AI, has a certain version of AI and has largely developed immunity to it?

There are many variants of Influenza, and not all of them are the highly contagious and pathogenic strain that is of current concern in birds. This one is much worse in poultry than in wild birds. Having one variant does not necessarily protects against infection with other variants - just like you can get more than one cold in a season. I had the flu twice one year, bad both times, even after being vaccinated - different strains with different pathogenicity and severity.
