Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

... I wonder if flowing sap makes them prone to breakage with added weight from ice and sap. Thoughts??
It wouldn't be a factor in pine trees, they have about the same amount of sap up from the roots all year.

In most hardwoods the trees push sap down into the roots as they freeze and suck it up when they thaw. How quickly or effectively they do probably varies a lot; it is part of what makes one species or variety hardier than another. That is why the trunks of cherries in some orchards are painted white - it keeps the trunks from warming up enough for the sap to flow on sunny days. The clear weather drops the temps at night too fast for the sap to get back down. Its expansion breaks the bark. Anyway, it might be a factor in heavier limbs if the temps drop really fast.

Maples, birches, and walnuts are different than most hardwoods. They pull sap up as they freeze and down as they thaw.

Good news; Hubby is back home at last! Heart attack, bypass surgery, and in-patient rehab, all in Ohio, and so worth it! Now more rehab here, and getting better as time passes. I've been busy!!!
AI found in a backyard flock in Macomb county, got the alert from Michigan Ag department. Keep those birds inside!
I'm good with CS with or without birds, although maybe we can bring birds specifically requested, and keep them in crates in our cars? Maybe.
Snow this morning, after a lot of rain. Pretty, but I'm over it. April soon!
Our crocus and daffodils are coming up, but not blooming yet. Usually some crocus are blooming by now, but not this year.

Good news about Hubby. Is he now a member of the Zipper Club?
I got the same MDARD e-mails today.
No snow here but pretty cold.

What a surprise I had this morning. Went out to open the coop and I had 3 eagles in the trees in my yard. How such large birds can fly through the trees is amazing. A couple of nights ago I was woken up at 1:00 am by a ruckus outside my bedroom window. Owls were hooting like crazy for about 10 minutes. That was pretty cool.
