Based on how many cubes we use in an ongoing basis, it shouldn't have been longer than a week.

We discussed it a bit and I found out that sometimes when there's just a bit left or it's become lukewarm she'll pour it into the tray. She'll keep doing it until the tray is full and then take the cubes out. During this whole time of her adding a bit here and there it's in the freezer. I think what happened is that there was so little in it that it freeze evaporated, if there is such a thing.

Yes, ice cubes in the freezer will shrink over time. Is it estivation?

BTW, I haven't seen an ice cube tray like that in... 50 years...?

No, that's animal dormancy.
Yes, ice cubes can evaporate in the freezer,
have had it happen with both water and coffee cubes.

@troyer those are the best ice cube trays ever.

They are nice, but the cubes don't "pop" out as easily as the plastic or silicone ones. We got these because we're trying to get away from plastics.

Of course we also have metal tray! What's the problem with fifty years old? They came with a frig long ago. Hah!
