Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

A short time ago I mentioned a wild turkey. Last Spring it, it's Mom, and sibling, stayed here around my flock for some reason. Well the Mom and other baby went missing. So the young turkey stayed with my domestic for over a year...we couldn't make it go away. About a month ago a large flock of Jakes came through and chased it around the barn (it was a Jake also). I bet they stayed an hour and gave up on trying to get him to leave with them. Well, it's been three days now and no sigh of the adopted wild Jake. Yesterday we re-homed a Tom and Hen to a nice homesteading family. We're down to our two original Tom and Hen pair and I'd like to keep it that way. But like last year, the Hen may start a clutch in one of the Rhubarb patches like she did before...I hope not, but the again our friend is already talking about her incubator...OH NO!

Starting to look like many places will not have power for maybe even another two or three days. The temperature stayed well below freezing, and the ice is not really melting out of the trees. I talked to a few lineman who said they just keep having more and more trees falling onto the lines. Not supposed to really warm up until Wednesday up here. Not that the chickens mind.

A big issue that has come up is that none of the gas stations in town were running, as most of the town has now lost power as well. That meant the closest gas station that was open was over 30 mi away. They finally got one going out on the reservation, but could not take credit cards at the pump because of lack of internet access. It was like being back in the '70s, cars lining out onto the main road, people patiently waiting in line to pay for their gas after they had reached the pump. And only one girl working at the station my gosh I felt so sorry for her.
Also closed, almost every store and restaurant in town including the grocery. Cheboygan and Petoskey apparently got it even worse than we did.
One of the reasons I was taught to top off the gas tank before a storm was because of possible power outages. We'd prepare before hurricanes, too, due to the need to evacuate on a short notice. And have cash on hand, because credit doesn't work without power.

My power came on finally tonight, after 4 days. I'm not holding my breath though, supposed to get another round of freezing rain tomorrow and the ice is not off at the trees from the last three storms. We shall see.

I haven't even thought about my chainsaw yet, I can't imagine walking around out there on the ice with a running chainsaw in my hands. That can all wait for later if necessary, but it's amazing how much of that stuff you can get rid of with a tractor by pushing it off into the woods. And the woodpeckers love that.
