Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Rabbits love sweet feed - I live trap a whole passle of them every fall/early winter that make their way over to my house from the neighbor. They have bunnies every spring, keep them all summer, then when they tire of them in the fall they release them to the wild - which usually involves a trip to my house where there is food and shelter

I was just reading on the Legbar thread about sex-links using CL roos and Delaware hens - the resulting pullets are buff barred Columbian with a crest and lay green eggs. Wow, I have a few nice Delawares! And 3 CL roos! Another spring project maybe.

Just got back home, eventful night of feeding birds, Got there and my sisters had them all locked up, I did my count to be sure everyone was safe and sound while Kelly fed the horses. As she finished up I got back in the car... I was playing on my phone and I hear her start screaming at me to get out of the car... Well, its cold LOL So I cracked the window asking what she was hollerin about. Well a dog found its way to the horse pen... We are dog people but you never know after dark what your gonna get. I yelled at her that she had the blasted pitch fork...she didn't see the humor. Turns out the gal was a nice yellow lab, glad the birds were locked up at this point LOL. After a couple hours talking on facebook and posting pics we finally found her home. PLEASE if you have a pet please put a tag on them and not just with the name, put your phone number too! This is the second time in less than a week that we have had this kind of "fun".

Hope everyone else is having a nice night!

Our nice night involved my son, the ER and an appendix removal! He's fine and looking forward to the wii, playstation, Xbox and movie library they have here, along with Popsicles. On the chicken note, my son has been showing off all his chicken pictures on his ipod to all the nurses. It actually distracted him before surgery. The nurses were ohhhing and ahhing over all the kinds they had never seen before. The only good thing is I stayed with my son and DH had to go home to clean up after the dog being shut in the house all afternoon. He also made sure all my chickens were shut up for the night.

Oh and I almost forgot, looking for a new roo. Thinking a Wyandotte not overly picky on color as I have both silver and golden hens... If anyone has any please let me know. :)

I've got a columbian wyandotte rooster if you're interested.

A cold start to the day,but the coffee is on, the house is warm, and life is good. Hope will soon be off to spend the day taking care of her 8 month old twin grand daughters. One has been crawling while the other refused to even try. Yesterday the non crawler started walking so Hope was pretty excited about that.
I've been watching Granny very closely as she received spinal injections during the period of contamination that caused the meningitis outbreak. She received her last injection on September 5th and hadn't had a problem until recently. What we assumed was just a boil appeared on her back and we have been administering normal treatment procedures and it has been healing well. However, after a newspaper article about a unusual number of absesses in the at risk patients I decided to call the clinic that had given her the shots. When I explained the situation to the nurse she imediately scheduled an appointment for today and said she would also schedule an MRI to be preformed ASAP. Hopefully all of this is merely cautionary and not something that will require hospitalization.

Ok Opa...I need your help! :)

I have some of the metal waterers where the metal "lid" slides down over the base and there's a hole at the bottom where the water comes out and there's a little nub two latch the lid on...but I can't keep the water in the jug! It just keeps over flowing. I tried filling the lid and putting the bottom into it, and I tried filling the bottom and then putting the lid on it...what am I doing wrong?!?! lol I also have one of the metal ones with two water spots on the side..like this one...but with two of the little side water access things instead of one.

I just can't figure it out! I've been making my own heated water bases and I would really like to use metal instead of plastic but I can't figure out what I've been doing wrong. Ideas? Tips? lol

During the winter I use a metal waterer with great sucess. However, I've found that if they are sitting very close to level they will not create the vacuum that holds the water and they quickly empty. Once I made sure they sat level my problem with them ended.
I have not encountered a waterer like the one you have pictured so I'm not sure how it works.

Glad to hear your son is OK tap! That must have been pretty scary for you!

Opa, will be thinking of Granny, and hoping that it is just cautionary. WOW on one of those grandbabies walking at 8mo!! My oldest walked and 9mo and while it's extremely comical to see a baby that size waddling around, they figure out how to get into EVERYTHING that much sooner!

We're having family Christmas at my parents' house tonight. My sister and her family is up from the Lansing area, so it will be wonderful to see her. Our family was pretty close growing up, but since she moved down there 13 years ago, we only see each other 4 or 5 times a year.

I'm happy to report that my GLW that was hiding under some scrap metal during our dog incident is not limping any more! Yay! I don't think she's been laying though....our egg count is around 3 eggs every 2 days from 3 pullets hatched this summer. The marans chick is laying 2 of those 3 eggs, so that means my wyandottes are not producing very well. Is it common for a hen to stop laying after an event like the one we had? Or maybe they just have a super-sneaky place they're hiding them? I've looked in all the corners......

Tap, I'm glad your son is doing well!

Sam, I will keep Granny in my prayers! She's a strong super woman. Tell her I said Hi.

Cold, just cold. Oh, and it's snowing. I've had enough of winter. At least we can look forward to Chickenstock.

Have a great day all
