Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Good morning Nova,
Amen sister. If county dispatch and animal control hadn't already been called by my hubby, that's.the route I would've taken too. I'm pretty sure legally I'm covered to shoot them when they're attacking my animals, but I want to be sure. I don't want these dirtbags.to try tosue me for everything I own and get away with it.

My goodness, I leave you folks alone for a few weeks and now a new link for flaming( what's flaming?). Anyway, I hope you all have been enjoying your summer. I have a question.....today my neighbour's rotts came into my yard. After they groweled and snapped at my Aussie who was safely on the deck thank goodness, and after they chewed up my kids sand toys, climbed in our swimming pool, "watered" my flowers, and started barking, growling and chasing my horses, they found my beloved chickens and turkeys......body count is 8. 7 of them are blue orpingtons that I bought as eggs, hatched and hand raised from a.reputable from out of state, because I haven't been able to locate a LF Blue Orpington breeder in Michigan. The eighth was my daughters prized pet blue wheaten ameraucana that we also hatched and hand raised. Animal control has been notified and they are coming out to my farm tomorrow to fill out a property damage report and have asked me to put a figure on what it would cost me to replace the birds and fix my fenced that the dgs ripped to pieces to get at the birds.....any suggestions on how I should figure a price? 4 of them were 7 week old chicks, and the rest were 14 weeks old.

We have had to deal with this situation with our neighbor's dog also. First for your chickens don't figure what they cost, you tell them what it would cost you to go get equal birds of equal age right now to replace yours that were killed. Even my hatchery birds were $10.00 each.

On shooting the dog you are within your rights. http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(4p...eg.aspx?page=getObject&objectName=mcl-287-279 Section 287.279 of M.C.L. if it doesn't work. Our neighbors kept telling us to shoot their dogs if they came over. We decided unless they were attacking our birds not to shoot them but to call the cops. That way they are being punished not the dogs. Since the cops were out we haven't had a problem. That said - if one was killing my chickens I would shoot it, most likely through tears but I wouldn't want to try and break it up any other way.

Opa hope you feel better today,, this getting old is not fun, now that I have retired I SHOULD have the time but can't find it. I am enjoying all the Grandma things. but kind of looking forward to the start of school so I can start to finish some old started projects

I heard a rucus and looked out in the Chante Coop, Casper had Spooky run into a corner was holding him by the neck feathers and just shaking the stuffing out of him. So I rescued Spook and took him to the garage where he sat for hours while I worked, even using the loud staple gun. He is such a nice fella and needs a good home please.......ANYbody??

I'm in Munger if you'd like a NICE rooster, he's 11 weeks and they are crowing now.
Love your roo but he would need a couple hens to go with him to keep up the breed

Good luck dealing with this. Those dogs are a threat to any child walking down the street. They need to be taken away before something horrible happens. and I agree, charge the max. You may not get anything but they may do something about the dogs.,,,,You will need the smallest type of stockade fence covered by hardware cloth to keep them out, on solid 4x4 posts, and will have to pay some one to come in and do the work!!

Good Morning!!

I can't wait until I get to know you all better!

Its been a bad year for my garden too. The weeds got out of control, the ground hogs ate 3 rows of green beans and most of my cucumber plants. I have gotten a lot of cherry and grape tomatoes, and a handful of bigger tomatoes. I also got 2 zucchini and 1 yellow squash. I don't have a lot of time for gardening and hate the heat of the summer, but keep trying every year

. This year the time I've spent out there has been so much more enjoyable because I'm able to watch the hens and duck while I'm working!

I am fortunate not to have to work right now, but am starting the nursing program at Washtenaw Community College next week. My son starts kindergarten at the same time so I've been busy getting us both ready.

Have a great day everyone!!

My tomato plants have been going bonkers this year! Last year they didn't get over about 18in tall, if that, and I had almost no fruit. THIS year, I fertilized like crazy (every time I washed diapers........we cloth diaper here.......I sprayed them down with fert.) and my tomatos are nearing the 4ft mark in some cases! I'm giving my cherry tomatos to my BIL since we don't eat enough of them to keep up with high output from 4 plants. The Early Girls have been ripening for about 2 weeks now, but I've still got a LOT of green ones. So much for the "early" part there I guess? My yellow tomatos and mystery heirloom tomatos are just starting to ripen as well.

OPA! Good to know about the romas! I've picked about 4 so far, but the rest of them are just hanging there, green as ever. I thought maybe something was wrong with them!

Anyone know of a good way to get rid of squash bugs? I let all my squash plants die once I was zuked out for the summer, but I've still got great big squash bugs all over the place and BIL says that they'll lay their eggs and I'll have an even worse infestation next year.

Almost all of my eggs are developing so far! I plugged in the turner yesterday and did a quick candle to see if they were doing anything yet, and I only have 4 or 5 that looked clear or lagging in growth, 2 of which were identified as having loose air sacs before I put them in the incubator to start with. Soooo excited! Only 16 more days!

My garden has been great this year. I've had a lot of beans, cuccs, squash, zucc, corn, and peppers. There are literally a ton of tomatoes which are a little slow to ripen. The pumpkins are doing good and turning orange already. My sugar baby melon only gave me 5 softball sized melons but my yellow watermelon is doing well along with the muskmelon. My peas could've been better but I planted them next to the corn so they probably didn't get as much sun as they needed but considering I planted them twice last year and only got 3 peas, I consider this year a success.

I love this! That's what I'm hoping to do... right after I'm done jumping through school hoops. 1337 would be hard. Mr. Chaucer and his Tales wrecked me. I'm impressed with your project, Juise!

Good luck! 1337 isn't hard if you're a gamer anyway, haha. I did find i really facinating, though, how it developed, changed, and how I was perfectly capable of carrying on a conversation that would not make the slightest bit of sense / be remotely readable to anyone outside the world of MMOs. Those lines are much, much more blurred now, though. :) Good luck, and try not to wait to finish school to make what you're doing enjoyable if you can help it!

Are you telling me that you fertilized them with diaper soup?

As for squash bugs, can you let the chickens get at them? Now, or later in the Fall if there are still other veggies around them? They took care of mine.

Of gardens... I am on my second round of peas. If the zukes do not produce any more, they are coming out and carrots will go in. I am giving them till the end of the week. That last storm did a number on them. Tipped them all over, took off like kites. My pepper plants... They are falling over. I am going to pick all the peps off and slice and dice and freeze. I think next year, they will be staked also. I hope to have those trees gone next year.

Any one close by have a welder? My jeep door needs a weld job. Bad. I am using zip ties with a 175 pound tensil weight. That lasts about 4 days, then snaps. Lol. Hey, I'd duct tape it if I thought it would work. Lol.

That's generally not over watering but blossom end rot which is a calcium deficiency. Though I suppose over watering could wash the calcium out of the soil... but I am not a a soil expert.
I was thinking overwatering because the tomato I did get was brown and mushy on the bottom. It's not that I don't appreciate where I am at now - my life has certainly been much darker - I make every effort to remember how swiftly this stage in my life will pass, and concentrate on enjoying the things that matter, but that doesn't always make it easy. Thanks, CG.
