Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Today is our 16 year anniversary. ...and we're both sick! LOL. It was kind of a wake up, give a kiss, say love you & happy anniversary, followed by a list of all our ailments and a "lets go get some cold meds, pain meds, kleenex, and some coffee" kind of morning. We both feel like crap, but it's still going to be a great day.

Congrats! And hope you both feel better!

We made it through February! Welcome to March everyone! Spring is just around the corner. Yay!

Stacykins - your goat is so cute. Poor guy. I know even our dog was having trouble with the snow. My son was kind enough to make him several trails through the front yard with the snowmobile. Anything for more excuse to ride, but it did work.

Feel better Maahbeaker and congrats.

I can't believe that the never ending month of February is done! It may be the shortest month but to me always feels the longest.

On my hatch, whenever I buy shipped eggs I always put in a couple of my own as control eggs. I know they are fertile and haven't been bounced around. So this hatch I put in four. Two were not fertile. But last night a PERFECT blue silkie hatched. Sometimes barnyard mix eggs turn out on their own. So both of my own eggs hatched but only one of the shipped.

I'm going to pull chicks while there is nothing going on and leave the incubator another 3 days.

Start at 90 - 95 degrees F. Lower the temp 5 degrees every week. Keep the red bulb all that time. The chicks are ready for outside when the temperature is around 60 and they are fully feathered.

That is the standard practice, some people do things a number of different ways and have success. I'm sure you will get conflicting opinions as you learn and grow.

Good luck and welcome.
this is what I do

Congrats on your anniversary, sorry you are not well

Me Nova I want the link too please!

Nigerian dwarf goats don't make very good snowplows! Their legs are too short!
Stacy, my dachshund Max looked just like that yesterday

Phew! Hopefully this will work for her. She needs to be broke of her broodyness and put a little weight back on before I reopen the nest boxes. Hopefully it wont take to long. I'll continue to watch her closely for the next few days.

One of my silkies went broody last month, in a coop where no one was even laying any eggs

. Fortunately she quit on her own.

Oh - I suppose it may not be easy to find 100 watt bulbs anymore.
Our True Value has 100 watt heat bulbs, as well as the 250's, I use those mostly - plenty warm enough and less energy used.

I got a heat lamp with my chicks tonight from TSC.

What Raz said. Glad to see you!

Tap, if you want some eggs from my flock, I have been getting some bantam Cochin eggs - brown/red and lemon blue roos over brown red and LB hens, one is a frizzle - you are welcome to them. Right now getting 1-2 per day. Also have eggs from my Basques, but you could also get a Delaware or Sussex mix in with those.

Wow I actually got multiquote to work. Score one for slow tech brain.

Well we got everything ordered yesterday! AND I found a local feed source that is a few dollars/bag cheaper than TSC and the little store that just opened about 10min from me. Added bonus? They sell "regular" and non-GMO feeds! Super excited about that!! The new place is open for feed sales 2 days a week, which shouldn't be an issue since I don't work on one of those days, and my husband usually drives through that area on his way home from work. Yippee!

My husband also decided that maybe we needed to get a few layers too. Yes. My husband who built 2 coops last year, will have to build a shelter for the meaties in April, and swears that he is NOT building me another chicken coop this year. Let's recap: we have 14 layers right now, I have 12+ BLRW eggs coming in mid-April, and I was planning on hatching a few more EEs when I set the BLRWs if my cockerel is doing his job (otherwise i'll hatch EEs in the summer) And his cholesterol came back high, so we've started a rather strict low-cholesterol diet to hopefully keep him from having to go on medication for it. That means I only "let" him eat egg whites.

I'll be spending almost 4 hours at TSC tomorrow. We're fostering a dog for one of the local rescues and they hold their adoptions there. Between chicks being there and a whopping 13 dogs, it's going to be a busy place!!
