Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Good morning...

Happy Friday!!

Today is DH's birthday! He turned 38.

My daughter has confirmed strep throat. Tonsills are HUGE. They swelled up so much this time, & quickly, that it started blocking her airway. Poor girl. She's on antibiotics and pain meds now & should start feeling better within the next day or so.

My silkie hen decided to start laying eggs again yesterday! Yahoo. She must have been waiting for me to open her nest box back up. I filled it with lots of extra straw bedding this time. Once she goes broody again I'll let her hatch some chickies. :)

One week left for the eggs in the 'bator on the counter. At last check (Monday) they were all still going strong and no duds. I'll probably candle them all again tomorrow.

Nice & proud of our rooster that's in with our laying hens. Such a good boy. He's not aggressive in the least, even lets the girls eat whatever they want of what he has, and is doing his job at keeping all 11 of them nice & fertile. Because of his size though he was wreaking havoc on their back feathers, so I did get those saddles for 6 of the girls (I call them their pretty dresses. lol). I have a nice pattern now, and will probably make a few more this spring.

Hmm... Well, my shift starts now. Everybody have a great day & weekend!

Let me know when your ready I have friends in Lakeville with goats for sale, they are kids in my 4H club :)

What kind are they? Also, how can I find out more about the goat club? My daughter is wanting to join 4H!

my first chicks ever.. having lot of fun with these little peeps.. this is when we first got them home..
Saginaw tractor supply had alot of banties for $1.

I need a shock collar or something when I go into tsc. They had 1 silkie chick so I gobbled her up and got another feathered legged lil cutie so she had company. Aquaintences with a guy that works there so I didn't have to make minimum. He told me what the other little one was, but honestly I wasn't paying attention (I was holding baby silkie!) so anyone know what this little guy/gal might be?
well i forgot my shock collar yesturday.. had to go down to saginaw and stopped at tsc.. came home with 3 isa, and 3 leghorn, 12 in incubator ready for lockdown today..

Thank you both! I've read all the books and info on the Internet that I've been able to find (hubby laughs at the amount of research I do...same thing I did with the chickens). I guess we'll see what's available when we get a spot ready.
I do the same, its endless what you can learn on here.. who needs college when you have the internet.. lol

What is in this picture taken with my blurry iPod touch camera? They're Araucana eggs! The first of the season I will try hatching. If I have a good rate of hatch, I'll be sending out some test batches to willing BYCers to see fertility rates after being shipped (free eggs, just cost of shipping).

I have a nice pattern now, and will probably make a few more this spring.

I made a few aprons for some of my girls using patterns I found online. Still tweaking to make them fit just right.

But one of my girls has some shoulder wear.
I have not been able to find a pattern for the shoulder protector portion anywhere. Does anyone have a pattern for that?

my secret weapon of choice to tame my chickens are banannas They don't start out that excited over them, but after a few times it's chicken candy! They will eat so fast you have to watch your fingers and they will leap quite tall to snatch them out of your hands!!! Crazy how they turn from cute cuddly little things into viscious little beasts when goodies are involved...... :D

Ya, hand height might be at play. I have gotten really good at interpreting their body language, too. Most calm down and like the attention; with the exception of that one buff orpington i had. She started out sweet, then got mean towards me (when she started laying and i started collecting eggs, LOL) Never grew out of the anger, had to send her out and boy did she give me the stink eye if i tried to hide them in my hand as i passed by! She KNEW. Would bite my legs! So i rehomed that one, but the others did all calm down. Even the shy bullied one that i brought home from the auction last summer, and fixed up. Now she seems to not only accept pettings, i catch longing glances when i pet the other hens on the roost and pass her by. But still won't seek me out. I have noticed that when hens are bullied or at the bottom of the pecking order they get nervous around me, too; she's at the top here but old habits die hard i guess.

not the best to show it, but this is one of my hens resting her face on my hand; very affectionate birds.

I'm pretty sure the other poster that inquired about toes falling off had black, which would indicate frostbite damage; if there's no black and they are still falling off there is an off-chance that it could be a severe scaley leg mite infestation though! If there is frostbite the black will dry up and fall off, but put some triple antibiotic ointment on the damage to try to curtail any infection. If it gets infected it can cause gangrene and possible blood infection! So look for oozing, pus, swelling, etc. A "normal" case should just dry up and fall off though. Threw the scare into the post because i think it's unfair to downplay it too much, in case one of you end up with the more severe cases and then if you didn't know you might lose your bird!

For the mites, i have a medicated foot dip in my siggy link that i pioneered and have found to be 100% effective, and eliminates the daily treatment method; it should be effective within the first treatment, but i re-treated the ones i did in a week to be sure. I would NOT eat the eggs for at least a week after the last treatment, i waited 2 to be safe! But totally worth it to get rid of the buggers! Any non-infested birds should be treated with plain vasaline smeared INTO the scales to prevent getting it from the others.
