Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Is there a way to see if a hen will adopt chicks? Someone told my husband that we can put the chicks in the yard and one of our hens should take them in. I'm afraid that the chickens would hurt the chicks. We have the chicks in a brooder right now. Would it be best to keep them there?
If you put them under her at night, you have a better chance.

Turns out one of my hens had gotten frostbitten toes at some point. Now, it is far too late to really do much. The damaged afters are black, hard, and dry. I sprayed blue kote on her feet, but feel terrible that I didn't notice it until now. I checked everybody else, no other chicken has signs of frostbite.

I noticed today she was high stepping. So when I picked her up, I saw that each foot had already lost a claw. One very recently, like today. The damage was obvious on the other toes, too.

The tissue is definitely dead. No blood when I trimmed the claw on the rock hard toes. This foot is worse.

The damage isn't quite so far up each toe on this foot.

She laid here for me while the blue kote dried.

Oh my! That is intense! I wonder if she'll even be able to walk once those parts fall off.

Will the black parts just fall off on their own? Aww, poor gal! Hope she improves & quick, she's one pretty chicken.

I did the evening adoption thing with my ducks, with 2 moms on same nest (who likely spoiled their own hatches that way) Anyway, my bet is probly depends on the mom you're giving the babies to. So likely best to keep them in the brooder.

I kept reading "JG" above..... And all I could think was Jersey Giant (the sub shop) in Lansing!! Yum, love love love that place. Must be lunchtime.

Who does Fermented Feed here?

Are you all going to re-post all the Chicken Stock info for newbies?
