Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I know how you feel, Stacy. Beulah and florus both lost toes. Out of 30 birds, only 2 had frost bite. I felt/feel horrible about it too. Beulah is broody now, and she walks very tenderly now. Don't think she'll be able to free range as well after the chicks hatch, but, will make sure she's got a safe place too.

Nooooo! Not 70!!! Save the fruit trees!!!

I'm going to plant snap peas in the next few days. the south side of the house hasn't had snow for almost a month and gets all-day sun, so maybe getting them in SUPER EARLY will be the trick to actually GETTING some peas. They hate me. Can't get em to grow for whatever reason.

I don't do fermented feed, but I'm planning on doing it with my meat birds at least while they're in the basement to help with the infamous stink. Not sure how it'll go when I'm trying to feed 70 6wk olds.

lol I know, when we got home from Florida in March I was all excited to see my first Robin, so I posted about in on FB. We got a snowstorm the next day lol.

Oops I meant that as a reply to NovaAman about jinxing spring lol

Exactly. Those 70 broilers, along with the 6 layers that are coming with them AND what ever I get from the eggs I'm setting tonight (32) and next week (12+) will more than keep me busy. I'm pretty sure my husband will let me do whatever I want as long as *I* am the one doing the work and not him.....but I think to do FF on that scale (probably 80+ chicks and almost 20 layers/roos) will require more of a time and space commitment than I'm willing to make.

Earlier this afternoon I was planting some rhododendrons and uncovered a few worms. DD gathered the worms up into a Disney Princesses watering can and says "Mommy, chickens eat worms?" I say "yes they do". She screams "Let's Go!!!" and takes off toward the barn. lol. She loves giving her chickies treats. I was so proud.

That's awesome! I love humming birds! And orioles. I am waiting to see a robin. The official sign of spring. Any spotted yet???

I have been seein robins for a couple of weeks now and today we had a bunch in the yard.

Hi HH, I was just telling someone about your beautiful Barred Rocks a few days ago, glad to hear you are doing OK

Thanks Mutt! BYC member Jeff1960 has my Barred Rocks and my German New Hampshires. I hear that they are doing great! I am missing all of them though! So much that I had a dream that I went to Family Farm and Home and brought home a bunch of chicks and then called Jeff and asked him if he had an extra rooster I could get and he ended up giving me back my NH roo!

National Tartan day on the 6th! Who else has colors?
I don't know what mine are!! How would I find out?? Never mind...Google can be your friend!

I am enjoying seeing all the pics of baby chicks, ducks and rabbits! So sorry about the frostbit chicken Stacy.

Oh my! That is intense! I wonder if she'll even be able to walk once those parts fall off.

Turns out one of my hens had gotten frostbitten toes at some point. Now, it is far too late to really do much. The damaged afters are black, hard, and dry. I sprayed blue kote on her feet, but feel terrible that I didn't notice it until now. I checked everybody else, no other chicken has signs of frostbite.

I noticed today she was high stepping. So when I picked her up, I saw that each foot had already lost a claw. One very recently, like today. The damage was obvious on the other toes, too.

The tissue is definitely dead. No blood when I trimmed the claw on the rock hard toes. This foot is worse.

The damage isn't quite so far up each toe on this foot.

She laid here for me while the blue kote dried.
that looks bad, hope she doesn't loose her feet, they look rather black also
