A rare breed... So what! If the dog was of greater importance being a rare breed, then it should have been better looked after.
I have a few questions for anyone that has done tanning before.
I have a squirrel hide that has been salted and pinned since Thursday. I would like the process to be as natural and chemical free as possible, without using brains...
How long do I leave it salted?
first...

and also do you have a good tanning site you go to that shows how to do this? I've been wanting to tan my rabbits that I cull but not sure on all it entails. Thanks!
dh asks if you want a hard tan or soft tan. He said leave it salted until its dry, not greasy. He also said don't use squirrel brains.....you'll go nuts. His humor not mine.
Yes they trickled in all afternoon. Only the one was scuffed up. My DH just mentioned that while he was on the phone with the father, the mother was yelling in the background "it was only a chicken". I am proud to say that he told them " no it wasn't JUST a chicken, that was my wife's pet! ". Think he has been indoctrinated?

about the squirrel brains... "only a chicken"...I suppose they think the eggs in the store just magically appear there...

I swear if I had no bad luck......or maybe trusting people I should be able to trust...but cannot.

The doe goat we just got, has disappeared. I left to get some feed and DH calls and said he let the dogs out and I can't find the goat......... I asked did you put the new goat in before letting the dogs out?........ duh, no. So, I am assuming that either the goat just escaped or she ran in terror because of the dogs, luckily I couldn't see where they could have gotten her. Every time I trust someone to manage something for me....... stuff like this happens. I hear the same thing.. "I didn't think blah blah blah.... " When the heck will he start THINKING!!

Sorry needed to vent..

If ya'll hear of someone finding a goat ... let me know!

Oh no!!! I hope you can find her! Start posting flyers everywhere! Most people don't know what to do if they find a goat. And since she is registered, she has her ears tattooed, right? So you should be able to identify her! I really hope she is found. Sadly, since you only have had her for a couple of days, she doesn't know your place is 'home' yet.

My egg production is soooooo weird now. Was getting 4/day out of 9 chickens, and now I'm suddenly down to 2/day and it got WARMER OUT!. Silly birds! I think I may have BYFM's issue with roosters too.

In my chick coop I'm pretty sure that 6 or 7 out of the 11 are boys, and I will probably have to cull one of the pullets. Her poopy bottom got better, and since going out to the coop has gotten a lot worse. :(

I laid awake in bed last night thinking about what I'm going to do for chicks in the spring. The obvious answer is to put one of my 6 or 7 roos in with my big girls and wait for one of them to go broody. I've got 2 blue splash wyandotte cockerals, 2 or 3 (or 4?) EE/mix cockerals, although only one has a pea comb, and a lavender orpington cockeral. I think I'd like to make olive and green eggers, so I should put the pea combed cockeral in there right? What's a good month to put eggs under an un-proven broody for early spring chicks? And would I need to introduce a roo to the big girls the same way I introduced the younger pullets (look-but-no-touch for awhile and then supervised together for a few days) or will a roo generally be more assertive right off the bat?

Planted somewhere around 170 tulip and daffodil bulbs last night. Can't wait for all the pretty flowers in the spring!

Do you have other goats and do they lead? I'd take a goat on a leash and let them call the doe to them.....just a thought, it works for loose horses.

I have read so many... google has so many results pop up. I have heard several times that it is easier if you have someone that has done it before helping you.
This is my first time ever trying tanning.

I caught it from Mom2em All... I now give the gift of roos to you!

I only have one roo at the moment because the others decided to go on a hen killing spree... My poor BR girl looks as bad or worse than my hawked girl did!!!
And poor Nugget (wry neck) improved then was unable to stand or use his legs properly so BF put him out of his misery. :( The only roo we really wanted we had to put down.

A lot of it has to due with the length of the day, rather than temperature. The winter solstice is approaching quickly, I am looking forward to days getting longer afterwards!

Started this morning, printing flyers, and the first place to go in our community for anything is the post office. Everything goes through there. It's a small community. So post office, general store and started back toward the house to start sticking flyers in doors... and I hear her bleating!! Neighbor down the road caught her and tied her in the yard out front. (I missed her the first time I went buy). So, she is safe at home. DH is relieved he can come sleep in the house now.....

I'm going to run out to the store to get some gift cards, one for the parents and one for their kids, since it were the kids who heard her last night and told them.

She's such a tiny thing... only 15 pounds or so. I have her in one of the dog runs to keep her quiet... hay, minerals, water and straw to snuggle in my turkey nest box. I put the boys in with her to help them bond better.

That was a great suggestion on taking the boys with me. Hopefully, it won't happen again.....but, she is a goat after all!
Here she is!
