Thanks for the responses on the egg washing. I guess that I will store mine on the counter but any I am selling to friends will be washed and put away... I am thinking about ordering the clean out special from Meyer also. Has anyone done this. It says that it could be any combo of chicks, bantams, or turkeys. they are $1.73 ea. I think that is the way to go? Thoughts?

When ordering chicks I would strongly suggest that you order exactly the breeds that you want and if you've no use for cockerels order pullets. Straight run can sometimes be a least 50% male. Feeding cockerels to even a half way reasonable butchering weight will exceed the extra cost of ordering pullets only. If you have the slightest adversion to killing or wasting money, avoid ordering straight run.

Ok looking for a little advice. I have heard different ways of egg storage. I have heard from some that they should not be washed at all and can be stored on the counter for some time. I have also heard to wash them right away and into the fridge. What are everyone's thoughts? I just want to keep the eggs tasting as fresh as possible. Thanks!

I asked this question about a month ago and yes you will more than likely get 10 different answers, LOL. I wash and store mine in the fridge and they seem to be fine so far

It was quite a day for me so I think I'll share.

I went to court as support for another CG chicken keeper. The prosecutor saw us together and was actually cordial as he greeted us. He then offered to adjourn Mike's case as there were other cases pending and it might affect Mike's case. The prosecutor hinted that they were not doing well in court and were not likely to appeal if they lose. (Prosecution got hammered in the change of venue case that is pending)

While waiting, I saw my court appointed attorney there representing another case. As it turns out, the lawyer is representing a fellow landscaper with an on-going action. We were all introduced and during the conversation, a trade was worked out between Tom and myself. He would provide me with hickory wood and I would provide him with eggs. A commercial transaction in the exchange of commerce. In front of court witnesses. A huge plus for both of our cases.

So later, Tom delivers about 7,000 pounds of wood and I give him 2 dozen eggs. He goes on to tell me that 2 of his neighbors have chickens and he never considered that they "might" not be allowed in the city. That triggers my "teacher reflex" and I explain the situation and how it pertains to us suburban folk.

Then I show him the eggs and how they have some "smears" on the shell. I explained the egg bloom and the reason that I do not wash eggs (until right before using). I explained the difference that he can expect between store bought eggs and the ones that I gave him. I suggested that he crack a store egg and compare it to a fresh egg.

Just a little while ago, he calls me to say that his kids were fascinated by the coloured eggs and how cool they were. The kids were so enthused that the whole family had eggs for dinner. Just not the white store eggs.

Ok, off to feed the livestock before going to work!
I made pumpkin pie, and its baking as I type. Its for a friend who had helped me pick up a truck load of pumpkins off a field a few weeks back. I used a pumpkin that I grew, a large one. And used Bella's milk and my eggs for the pie, and made the dough from scratch.
