Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Cute babies Herducks.

Be careful. DH wiped out yesterday. He said it was only because he has ninja like reflexes that he was able to land flat on his back. Luckily I guess his ninja skills kept him from hitting his head but he did injure his shoulder.

I have a question for those of you who sell birds. I want to do this and have started my plans which begin with a health check of my chickens. I am still awaiting test results but thinking ahead anyway. The next thing is where do you sell your chicks? Or rather how do you find the people who want them? I think it may be a bit more difficult up here as we have less area, people and interest. I am a bit worried that I may end up with too many birds at the end of the season. I have lots to do before hand but how many I plan to hatch will determine how much work I have to do. My son and that adorable Mr. Pheasant have convinced me we need to hatch a few out just to have around. We'll see what else he talks me into this year.

e boxes that are next to the roost bars for awhile to make sure they understand that the boxes are NOT for sleepytime.

Do I not worry about it and stop adding more straw? Do I suck it up and put straw in all the boxes every day? Use something else?
never had that problem , carpet sounds like a good idea, maybe you could put a small wedge in the box so the eggs roll to the back?
Had some multi-quotes set up but c`computer has been acting up so they are gone.
Please be careful, you don't need any broken bones.

love the chic pics, so sweet

any one in the Greenville,Belding,Lowell area, if you take a fecal sample from you chickens to a vet were do you go?? I have been going to town and country, and I always have to remind them they have done a fecal on my chickens before, but they are unsure. so I thought if we all go to the same place, maybe they will get someone to study up a little so they will feel more confident when doing chicken samples.

I never feel like they know what they are looking for??

I don't know but if you find out somewhere other than this thread could you let me know? That's information I'm sure we should have on hand.

I am out in farm country and in Marlette there is an outside flea market every Monday (yes, even in winter). I always see allot of people there selling some type of farm animal. There are allot of Amish people there buying and selling as well. Maybe you could find out if there is something similar out in your area. If not, maybe you could start one. I don't believe they charge anything to set up an area for your goods. If all else fails...Spam Craigslist with ad's for them.

Just a thought.....Good Luck!

chicken grandma has link in her sigi to local vets that will see chickens, Town & country will do it, but when they ask you what do chickens get what am I looking for, and the vet tells you he has seen 1 or 2 chickens (in his office) in 20 yrs. it doesn't give you a lot of confidence ,,,.... so my thought is since more people are having small flocks and are more likely to take a chicken to the vet, if we all go the the same one in a given area, they may get more experience and perhaps see a need
I wanted to post this video and article because it was something we had been discussing a while ago.
This is an update of what has been happening to this farm and the family trying to use their rights as Americans.

I shall say no more... but would like to talk in PM's if anyone would like to discuss this further.
This is VERY stirring ... It is so hard to show people that there rights are slowly being taken away, rules and reg. are being set on small farms, orchards, ect. that make it impossible to comply, this is also being done to small business' Big corp, is in control of our gov. and our lives.

this man should perhaps appeal to big local bus, that started out small like Amway??? they may have compassion and $$

Well, I went out to check and make sure everyone went back in the coop at dark last night (found the houdan wandering around in a corner of the run this afternoon, and it seemed like she didn't know where to go to get back to the coop door) and ALL of the new chickens were in the nest boxes. All 9 of them. So THAT explains why they keep kicking all the straw out I think! And all the poop!! I set everyone on the roost bars and then used some landscape fabric to make a curtain over the front of the boxes to hopefully discourage them from going back in once I left. Might take a few nights, but hopefully this solves the problem.

I've got a hen that's not eating. Frustrating. She just stands around, follows the flock in and out of the coop but lags behind a bit. She's drinking, I witnessed her drinking. Pooping liquid which makes sense since she's not eating. I separated her so I could observe her but nothing's changed so far. Hasn't touched the food I gave her. Everything feels okay. Crop is normal, rear end is messy but she's so stinking fluffy that this is normal for her. Vent looks normal. Tail is down now that she's out of the coop and away from her buddies. She's been like this all week. No worse, no better. *sigh*

Lady
Did you try giving her something she can't resist? Like scrambled eggs or yogurt?

I force fed a chicken wet mash with an eye dropped until he was strong enough to eat on his own again.

I have been watching some really old episodes of Sesame Street. I with they went back to teaching the kids about farms and VOTING instead of having Abby's Flying Fairy School or having it be all about Elmo
