Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Um, thanks everyone for the piglets, but I had posted that a week before Christmas. Someone simply refreshed that old post. So old news. BUT, I did have two more new litters last week.

Gert had 8, and Maisy had 2! Shocking that Maisy had only 2! Oh well. Have 30 pigs now.

Anyone want some of these rare and wonderful heritage breed? I have some that are breeding age now, or want some tasty pork to raise?

So Adorable!!

Thank you so much for that Craigslist ad. Last night I went and saved two of the girls that were there, I washed them and made them happy. Ill try to attach a photo of them. It's Elvis and Cali! Well it's official I can't figure out I on my iPhone how to add a photo to a post so guess not.

There is another Rose here? I don't meet many others with that name. lol

Anyway, HI! I am pretty new. I read more than I talk at this point. I do not have any chickens yet, but I plan on building a coop this spring and get some chickens. We live in Muskegon. I am interested in chickens for eggs this year and maybe next year we will think about for meat. I also thought about quail for eggs. Yes, I know they are small, but they are perfect sized for little ones (we have 4). Plus I have some quail egg molds. We live on .8 acres just outside of Muskegon (we are in Egelston township).

When I asked our township about the local laws, they said 10 chickens and when I asked about a rooster she said she did not see anything against it. I know there is the right to farm act (is that what it is called?) but my SO works for the government. I do not think he would be willing to fight to keep more (not that it is an issue right now). My one neighbor has 4 ducks, so I do not think there will be to much issues from her. I was thinking of putting the coop closer to her yard (once I can get pics on the computer I will post a picture to get thoughts).

From what i've been told people who aren't familiar with the breed can confuse them with EE's, so totally possible! :) My "basketball" hen was a complete sweetie, very intelligent. Only downside to the orloffs is that they lay good, so "wear out" in a couple years. I love that even the roos look like basketballs though! LOL.

Where do you get hatching eggs for your Russian Orloffs? :D
I got my eggs from Star Bright Farm here in Michigan. We have gotten many hatching eggs from Michele and all of them have been great birds.
I have some russian orloff chicks coming as soon as it warms up enough to safely ship them. I am debating on keeping them. I have 10 new breeds coming in the spring already and am not sure now that I want 11.

I have white bresse, hedemora, olandsk dwarf, Isbar, tolbunt polish, bantam choc. orps, barred cochins and more coming. Not sure what I was thinking!! I will have a few chicks to bring to chickenstock for sure!
My son is leaning toward olandsk dwarf for this year's 4-H... which is much better than giant cochins!

He still has time to change his mind so who knows what we will really end up with. I just want something small since it is still early in the year and depending on the weather, may end up in the basement longer than I want them to.

Crap crap crap. Just went out to check on everyone and my middle son's white rock is sick. Crackly breathing, sighing (think of a quiet crow call with every exhale), and she let me just pick her right up.....which isn't like her. I've got her in the house in a pet carrier, water with ACV in it, I'm making her some oatmeal and am going to put a bit of yogurt in it. Probably give her some wazine too. Ugh. This REALLY sucks. Anyone else have any suggestions??? It almost sounds like something is stuck in her windpipe.

Hi everyone, I went ahead and put old lady down today.. she was still acting the same.. and I am glad i did it from the results of opening her up and checking her out. she was like 50% more emeciated from yesturday.. I took pictures for all to see.. hope i dont gross anyone out or offend anyone with my pics.. she was miserable and I feel good about helping her pass on.. Its never easy, but i did it real humane and she went fast..I held her thru her passing.. and said a prayer.. Now she is up there with my dad and i know he will take good care of her.. she wasnt going to get better.. Thank you everyone for all your advice thru the last day or so..

This is her breast bone, when i felt it this morning i knew then to put her down.. I could grab that with my thumb and finger.. I guess that really helped me decide this am.. because it didnt feel like it yesturday when i check it..

I am thinking this is her reproductive system.. I was suspecting to see this since she has always had a hard stomach.. that big one was atleast 4 inches big.. i wish i would of measured it..
it all looked like hard boiled yolk..

check this liver out.. I did not look healthy.. wasnt firm.. Kinda was like mushy and stretchy.. definately not healthy..

RIP old lady.. No more suffering for you..
