Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Just sitting here this morning drinking coffee and watching the wild turkeys in the back yard. 20-25 were about 30' from my window and another 10-15 were 200' away scratching under the choke cherry tries. When that group suddenly took wing and flew up into the trees I wonder what had spooked them. Moments later my question was answered when a large prime coyote came out into the mowed area. He stood there a few minutes and then disappeared into the brush. In a matter of minutes the turkeys flew back down. I doubt that coyotes are very successful hunting adult turkeys.

Nova, I have several "house" chickens and I've never had any problems with dust or odor. I'm not possitive but I think the temperature of the freezer might have something to due with that.

Very funny Opa! LOL

So I think I am going to try the idea of fermenting feed... Has anyone on here done it with any luck? I am also working on research of ways to keep the Cornish x's healthy while they gain weight at a managable speed. Fun Fun.

One method of ferment grain (wheat, oats, corn, etc) is to place a grain filled container in a warm location and cover with water and wait for natural fermentatin to occur. You can speed the process by adding a container of plain yogurt.
Another method to feed grains to birds is sprouting. Pour warm water over grain filled container and allow to stand overnight. Pour off water, rinse, and drain. Rinse and drain daily to keep it from souring. When sprouts reach 2-3 inches feed to birds.

Alright. I have a bunch of veggie scraps that I am wanting to give the ladies today, but they won't come out of the coop, and I don't want to just dump it in on the floor. I've got a number of those plastic net-like bags from citrus fruit in my cupboard.......can I put all the scraps in that and hang in in there?

Broody alot??? That dang bird will lay eggs for 3 weeks tops then be broody again. She'll brood the eggs, keep being a mama until the chicks are about 5 weeks, start laying, then at 8 weeks, she's all crabby again. LOL. AND her sister is the exact same way!

I really need one of those, my buff orp, is a good broody but usually not more then once a yr. and I never know when
I have them on 3 craigslist cities. =\ with no luck the past month
maybe because they are small?? I but some on craigs list last summer and got an answer right away, I am sure they went to freezer camp but I already have a freezer full and didn't want to do any more
On first reading, I thought you said Nova goes broody a lot, which of course resulted in coffee-keyboard.

It really is not hard to keep the cornish alive,I let mine free range, but they don't go far. just dont let them go to long, they just get a lot of fat on them. We did freedom rangers last year. better free rangers and a little more hardy

We didn't get to much snow ,maybe 2"

Mary, do you vaccinate??
