I have a 3 yr old cross beak, it will just get worse, If I had to do it over I would cull. It is not hard to keep if you chose, they need a deep dish to eat out of. mine runs with the rest of the hens, can get worms if she is alone and the others don't grab it first. I didn't think she would make it through the first winter, because she gets her head all wet when she drinks.... you do not want to hatch any of her eggs as they will pass on the deformity, Some people file the beak it may help a little; but will not fix it. Just wondering, does anyone know where I can get a coop to hold about 7 chickens in for cheap? Or coop plans ... anything ? In September we had one hatch. Since, she's had to live IN THE HOUSE because apparently Tractor Supply doesn't sell coops in Fall/Winter ! 
Hi xxpandaxx,. check out craigslist, they usually have coops and chickens you can buy or get them free, i just scored a free coop and 2 chickens, i go pick them up on tues..Hello everyone ! New to the thread .Anyway, February 24th, Tractor Supply is starting "Chick days" where they sell chicks, ducks and hopefully geese. I'm planning on 2 chicks, 2 ducklings (one roo, one hen, one drake, one hen) and a female gosling, but I won't get them until I get a good coop !

I tried trimming back, you have to have a steady hand and you can only do a bit at a time because there's a blood vein in the beak. Look at the edge of the beak and you will see a translucent part at the tip; that is the part that will be able to be trimmed. I had one point i got hopeful, because i had caught it early and was trying to trim back slowly to the point where the one part of the beak still fit into the other; the hope was that keeping the beak "grooved" together would be like braces and kind of push the beak to grow straighter. Unfortunately the last trim i did before his great growth spurt released the top of the beak from it's groove. It never righted itself, and since they don't wear themselves down naturally when crossed had to be trimmed about once a month or so or he couldn't eat. Very sad, he could only eat from a deep dish. In the end he got more and more skittish because of the fear of the trimming. No good advice here. Don't know if i had known what was coming if it would have been any easier or if i could have culled.
