Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

here is a very good article about roosters, try reading this and see if that sheds light on any possible triggers for the aggression.

eta that for an overly hormonal rooster, yes i firmly believe that it gets passed on. My pet rooster was a handful, he was one of the EE roos with the taller combs. The taller ones i've had have been super dominant for some reason. At any rate, all of his sons have been very dominant as well. Not mean per say, but dominant, and close enough at times to be worrisome.

I just got Kelly on board with the plan to build a new hoop house coop!!!! Thinking about 8x20, thought is that if we need more room later I can butt the new up to the old and open a door between the two. What are everyones thoughts?

During the winter months you could cover it with heavy duty greenhouse plastic.
Just scored on a huge insulated dog house... this will either be a goat house or a new chicken house..... decisions decisions!
It's being delivered tonight! It's 6x4x3.4tall.. With a little stain, securable door, venting and maybe vinyl flooring it'll be perfect!

I bought an awesome shirt for ChickenStock! I came across this VERY CHEESY horror film from 2006 on Youtube. So I had to see if they sold any merchandise from the movie. The name of it is killer. Poultrygeist ...Night of the chicken dead.

Here's the shirt I bought.

I hope you got a laugh out of this....I know I did!
BTW...my buddy thought it was so funny...he bought one also.

Thank you for the ariticle, i think i have read this b4, but was good to read again, i was planning on waiting and see how he is in the future b4 i take any drastic measures, he was fine when i gave them treats later in the day, plus i notice he is nice with his girly, he lets her eat first, sits outside in front of the nesting box till she is done laying, makes alot of grumble noises when i am out there.. I am new to having a roo, but have been doing lots of ready about them and their aggression. which i am glad i have.. gives me a idea what to look for and what i may need to do.

That's hilarious!

Our grazing area is a lot bigger than yours.. pretty much free range them in about 1/4 acre. Only reason we have it fenced is to keep our dogs out really. It is getting a little bigger once we add the goats too. So, covering it is a bit difficult. We are thinking of covering at least a smaller area of it to help a little. We will also be putting covered areas throughout the area for the goats to seek shelter during the rain/snow, but the chickens might use that too.
I built the run I have with the intent of having someplace for them in the winter. Until I had the hawk make a daily buffet out of my birds, they were never locked up. They have over an acre of MY property to range, as well as Mrs. Browns, my other neighbor who loves them. She's even got them trained to come for treats when she goes out her front door. Yup. She was very devestated by the loss of Mr. Fluffers and Roger. She loved those boys... The only part of my yard that is fenced, is for the dogs...
