Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hillbilly-I was debating how I wanted to do that, should I just cover one area with tarps in the summer? My other thought was to keep it with plastic year round but have it set up to roll up the sides about 3 feet in the summer...I wonder though how hot it would get in there ....hmmm....

if you use a dark tarp it will give them shade in the summer, use the dark on the top and white or clear on the sides. the clear plastic, unless you spring for the green house plastic, disintegrates in the sun. even the so called heavy duty. if you can get an old trampoline or tent, they hold up very well in the sun even better then the heavy duty tarps

While bitterly cold this morning, with the predicted sunshine the day will at least look good. While I wasn't overjoyed with yesterday's snowfall it was far less than what the east coast is now facing. Snow depths of 34 inches with hurricane force winds is something I wouldn't care to face.

For some reason I've been awake since 430 and have finished the first pot of coffee. At 8am I will wake Granny and give her all f the medicines they have her on. It's very important that they be given on 12 hour intervals one hour prior to eating. So after giving her breakfast at 9am I may move to my recliner for a short nap.

I'm anxious for spring so that I can segregate my birds and start collecting eggs for hatching. I need to hatch a few Welsummers for my flock and several folks have expressed a desire for eggs and chicks.

Just scored on a huge insulated dog house... this will either be a goat house or a new chicken house..... decisions decisions! It's being delivered tonight! It's 6x4x3.4tall.. With a little stain, securable door, venting and maybe vinyl flooring it'll be perfect!
Goat house! Mine is styled like that and they love tp jump on the roof and fool around. The flap doors are perfect for bad days. I have a slpid door I shut them in at night. Mine is 6x6x6 and houses 3 toggies no problem.

Hi everyone. Kimmie how's life? HH, I lost a NH hen. No broodies so I don't know what to do. I can get fertilized eggs from the hen but no bator! Email me if you have an idea? Baby it's cold out there!

I believe that I mentioned this a few weeks ago but here is a reminder. A representative of the USDA reminded the ag commissioners of the farm census being taken through the end of February.

The USDA considers any farm operation to be a "real" farm if they produce or have the potential to produce $1000 worth of agricultural goods in a year.

If you sell your eggs, wool, honey, fruit, vegetables or any other ag product, you might consider signing up with the USDA as a farm for the census.

You can get started here.
https://www.agcounts.usda.gov/cgi-bin/counts

If nothing else, it should show that there are more of us small farmers than they might think.
After reading the applicable quote being "produce or have the potential to produce", I signed up. Hey, my $60. of egg sales last year was a start! And now I can show the DW the USDA considers me a farmer, so I need more chickens.

Beautiful morning! Another heavy hoar frost or freezing fog, whichever. Aside from it forming on my eyelashes while I was outside, it was an enjoyable walk.

Another elm tree.

House across the field. About 1/4 mile away! The field actually contains a kettle and isn't flat at all. Sandhill cranes live down there in the summer.

View down the road. Eerie fog still at work.

The deer netting around my garden

Falling frost.

A couple of my chickens soaking in the sun, in front of their coop door. It's the only sun they'll get all day since they won't come outside.
