Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I do not recommend refridgerating eggs you want to hatch. I find the best method is room temp in an egg carton with the "pointy" egg down. I've had eggs hatch that were in the fridge, but I do believe it lowers the hatch rate.
Hi rirjen, glad i had the eggs in the fridge, made me think on it a little more and decided i am going to wait till weather is warmer and i am ready
i will do fresh eggs, i guess the newness of having fertile eggs, incubator, stuff for chicks feeders, waterer, light. got me in the mode of thinking chicks chicks chicks..
glad i had the eggs in the fridge.. gave me time to think and decide i am not ready.

seeing everyones chicks got me in the mood. have some things i want to do b4 i hatch eggs.. thanks everyone for keeping it real..
I guess i read several articles, awhile back.. and new it was possible.. that is why i was going to do it. but i dont have to get this done now. it can wait.

sorry for rambling

have a great day all

Don't get me wrong, you can incubate them...I've just heard that best would be at room temp :)

Daron... sorry your plans didn't come to fruition. There is a school of thought, that when you take too long on something, the chance passes you by, well then, it just wasn't meant to be. Keep saving that money, so when the time is RIGHT you will have it. You never know. You maybe driving down the road one day, heading for someplace and pass a small farm that has a just right house, and property, and it will be just perfect for you. A place for you to start your OWN life. A place to build a home of your own, and for a future wife and children. You can't live with your parents for ever, no matter how great they are. NO WIFE wants to live with her mother in law. EVER. Unless it is a desperate time. Really am sorry though, I know how much you were wanting it. It'll all come round to being what you want and need in the end.

Lady, I know here in Holland at the TSC they do on Saturdays a market in the parking lot. Maybe something to consider. Copy and pasting the ad for you. I am considering trying it out to make a little extra money over the summer with some produce sales/egg sales. Anyway, I know it might be a bit out of your way, but you could box your stuff in plastic storage totes and such with prices marked and I could help you out on Saturdays too if you can't make it over, and store it in my furnace room.

I seem to be a dismal failure at culling birds. I have an Orloff - Yuri who was injured in the fall and ended up with a crossbeak. I was 90% sure it was a rooster but hadn't heard a crow or seen an egg so I figured it was worth waiting. If it was a hen I would wait to cull until after I had some eggs. So Yuri is very underweight even though I trim his beak. He is also the worst with mites - they seem to know he isn't healthy. Then this week he injured his foot. The toe is black as is a spot on the side. So it was either bring him in and treat or cull. I was undecided until I saw him sparing with another boy yesterday. I don't need another rooster, I would consider if he was a hen. So my DH said he would take care of him and didn't. So using Opa's very simple directions (obviously not simple enough for me

) I went to do the deed this morning. Now I'm the sensitive type that can't even stomp a mouse. So I finally get the nerve up and get him relaxed and give his head/neck a good pull. I feel separation (must not have been enough) and lay him down, only to have him stand up and look at me and toddle off to the door.

So I do it a second time with the same result. Third time I think I must need to get a better grip on his head... and can't get it to move at all.

So he's back in the coop until I get the nerve to try again or my DH comes home. I have never claimed to be a farmer.....
Oh my goodness I know now I can't do it! Why can't you shoot him? Wouldn't that be easier? I feel bad for you.

Ladyrsanti - you live near Alto? I went to Alto Elm. when I was little. My parents live closer to Lowell though.
My two youngest boys go to Alto Elementary

Did you by any chance have a hand in those painted ceiling tiles in the library? Every time I'm waiting for my boys to get out of whatever community ed. class they're taking, I sit on the library couch and look up at those tiles and wonder where those kids are now, since they are all signed and dated, back in the 80's most of them.

Sharing a booth is a GOOD idea. Like time-share but for farmers markets. That way, no one person has to give up every weekend (or certain days of the week) of their lives during the summer. Holland is a pretty long way though but I'll definitely keep you in mind -thanks :) The market in Lowell is in the TSC parking lot as well but I've never been down there when it's open so don't know what it's like.

Why? rambling is what we do! You can do eggs, not so hard! Having a broody hen is easier though. Hatching them at home is so rewarding, and they bond with you better. They seem to be healthier too. :)

Are not all of our decisions being questioned all the time?

Oh, to feel like a kid again. If only kinda.

Daron, Did you talk to your (previous) neighbor about how you might purchase his property? Why did you think he knew what you wanted if you did not tell him? Even when people think they have talked things out there are misunderstandings. Good communication takes lots of effort, for many of us, for various reasons. Sorry you are so disappointed.

Some song says to. "Pick yourself up, Brush yourself off, And start all over again." You are young, keep on keeping on, You have done it before. You can again.

So, the small brooder is not doing its job anymore since it didn't have a lid, two of them jumped out when I pulled out the waterer to refill today. All 5 of my dogs were waiting for one to hit the floor!

A friend saw something like this so I said what the heck. I pulled out a rubbermaid tub and got to work. You can't see it well but I used hardware cloth to cover the openings, I hope that it works out Not the prettiest thing but it will work for now :)
