Good morning Michigan, a beautiful snowy morning, just enough overnight to make the trees look pretty but not enough to have to shovel. Been stalking the PP/egg swap thread and now have a whole mess of eggs coming in April, so hope the snow is gone by then!

I got my first look at my coops since last Monday and our storm last week. Disaster! I'm surprised any of my birds still have wattles and combs. My DH can't tell me what happened but all of the bedding is wet, moisture condensing on the windows and smelly, and it's only 20 degrees out!

So I opened everything up but with the bedding wet through all 8 inches I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Gratefully DH did cull my poor bird for me while I was sick.

My brain is still not working and I need help figuring my lock down. I've done it so many times but I can't get my head around it so HELP please. I set my eggs at midnight on Feb 8. So Tonight at midnight would be day 18 to take them out.... right? I've gone over it 3 times and each time I confuse myself more.

Anyway, there is a lady that is interested in true Aracauna (SP?) hatching eggs.. Does anyone ship from here? (Stacy? heehee) If yes, I'll pass info on so you can settle it between yourselves.

Until I am certain of fertility, I won't be offering any hatching eggs. I don't want people to get eggs that won't hatch. Araucana hatching eggs are especially delicate when shipped, so they already have lower hatching rates.

Your kitty is so pretty! I love her flame pointing. I have a rescued shorthaired flame pointed kitty who lives up to her likely Meezer heritage! She is noisy and affectionate!

He's a boy... or was once upon a time. Heheh. Yeah, he's a rescue too, orphan. VERY noisy. He yowls at all hours of the day. 17 years old I think we figured. Doesn't like to be pet proper, just rubbed with a foot while laying on the floor - any floor will do - and will clamber desperately to hug you if you pick him up. He'll sit behind your head on the couch and doze into your scalp, drooling (drool-jewels). Fun.

Holy Moley! It's been 13 hours since a post was made, and I am beating everyone this morn... I would say the coffee is on, but it is not. I am going to bed. Just got home from work, wasn't a bad night, but people sure need to learn to clean in front of their mailboxes, I hate tossing papers... Oh well.

S'alright, coffee gives me panic attacks.

Are the papers paid subscriptions? I would think if they paid for it, they might just clear the snow. The postal system used to warn us that if we didn't clear our boxes, we wouldn't get our mail, period. That's fair. And as much as I complain about the volume of freebee papers I do use them for shredding, bedding, seedling pots, compost and meat diapers. Even then, it's worth it. Not that we've had enough snow this year to have to worry about it... here anyway.

I started setting eggs in groups of two or three since Feb. 3. I have been adding 2-4 eggs every 4 days from my blue ameraucana pair. I hatched the first chick last night. Unfortunatly I dropped it's pair

candling on day 7 and killed a little developing chick so, this little one will be all alone for a few days. It seemed so lonely when I found it this morning so, I added a little beanie baby to the hatcher for it. I set it in the corner and it Loves it's new friend. It keeps going back to the corner and rest with it's friend. LOL Too Cute!!!




When my DH saw the chick sleeping with the stuffed animal - he told me I need to add another beanie baby for the brooder so, it will have one under the heat lamp and one farther away from the heat. He even said I should buy a little stuffed animal chick for the future.

And this from the same person that told me - we are done building chicken coops. I think he is enjoying them as much as I am but, doesn't want to admit it.

Ok so count the day after it's 24 hours is up? When the eggs go in it is 0 days and after 24 hours it is day one. I won't be starting any at midnight again I think it confused me. Thanks Opa. It also means I counted wrong on my button quail and locked it down a day early.

Newbie question! I have not ordered chicks and am trying desperately to stay away from TSC. For a first timer, would you recommend that I get started Pullets or go all out and set up for Chicks? If I get pullets, they can go straight to the coop, no set up costs for heaters, etc. On the other hand, I won't have the first few weeks to have my hands on them, being picked up, getting them used to people.

ok here is a really silly question. Do you pronounce it "Isa" Brown or "I S A" brown? LOL easier to call them comets!

I always say "Isa" as a word. While Isas and Golden Comets are both production-bred reds, they are actually bred a little differently - each company has their "secret recipe" of breed mixing.
While it is fun to have chicks, it takes 18-24 weeks for them to start into production - about 5 1/2 months - so there are costs involved and a long delay until you get eggs. I personally prefer to raise chicks, just cause I like to.

I tried CR's method of cooking hard-boiled eggs with fresh eggs gathered this morning, and it worked perfectly.
