Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Thank you everybody for the anniversary congrats. I am feeling a bit better today. No fevers... the cold has finally moved to my chest. Lovely. At least that's usually the last stage. :)

Gonna watch our son's bowling league today, and pick up some real sudafed from the pharmacy counter. Might talk DH into picking up a certain breaking dawn movie... but likely not. LOL.

....

So, I think I did actually manage to break our broody! I have seen more of that hen over the last 2 days than I have in the last month. Of course everytime we go by her she's crabbing up a storm about her nest boxes being blocked off... but I'm ok with that. She's never really been a super chatty bird, so it's nice to hear her so vocal. LOL. She's been eating and scratching around in the dirt outside now like a good little hen. Finally. :) Looking forward to her giving up some eggs again soon. Hopefully.

Sitting here this morning and thinking about yesterday's experience with the cable company. I'm reminded of the commercial of several years ago where the teacher tells a kid that he can't have any new crayons that they are only for new students. I've been with Comcast for many years and recently when I asked why my bill was so high when I am constantly see their ads for much cheaper rates I was told that I was receiving the very best rate possible. So after stewing on it for a while I changed to U-verse for $50 per month less and for a much better lineup. When I called yesterday to cancel my Comcast service they immediately offered to cut my bill by $60 and improve the line up. Why couldn't they do that in the first place?
I have gone through that several times. Now I cut right to the chase. I tell them what price I am willing to pay in order to stay with them. Be prepared to change companies if they don't meet your price. Only one time did a company say that they would not match the price I wanted!

Blah, it's snowing again here. I'm a little concerned that if I get my chicks next week, by the time they are 8 weeks old, it will still be too cold for them outside in their coop. I won't have electricity in the coop. Am I just being overly concerned? I know adults can handle the cold, but what about the teenagers? I can always use straw for bedding for a while to keep the coop a little more warm but is that enough?

Where did you get them? How many were set and how many hatched? I know that the smaller the egg, the worse they travel with chickens. That's probably a big part of it.

So is anyone tapping maple trees yet? A buddy on mine in New Hampshire is boiling his sap this weekend.
I think I would like to try it.

Well I am back I was in the hospital sick with food poisoning or so they say. I never want to go through that again! I still am so sick and weak my husband is taking care of my chickens. I think I am going to live. Here's a pictue of an eggs we got wednesday the day I got sick. The one on the left was like at least three inches long, the one beside it was a large egg. I was huge.

glad you and your family is ok.. and glad your getting more eggs.

I am ready for the storm, bring it on..

I processed 5 old hens last week, brined them for 3 to 4 day.. i took two days to roast 2 different batches, then in evening after cooled i separate meat from bones, and strain broth.. i have 2 big pots of broth to skim fat off and freeze in containers..
I have some of the cooked chicken in crockpot with homemade sulsa, some fresh frozen jelapenos, and other spices, and going to make chicken burritos for supper..

I cant believe how much meat there was. i even have extra cooked meat to vacuum pack and freeze..

I hope i dont affend anyone by posting i did this..

these hens were old and not laying anymore. if they were still in production i would of kept them alive,

dd and i are planning on sterilizing the incubator tonight.. i have read bleach water works good, what does everyone else do to clean their incubator

tjbeckman glad your dog is ok, how scary.

chicken walker thanks for posting your wierd find.. pretty cool

Raz nice find.. and glad your dog is ok also..

Does brining have something to do with the age of the chicken? And no this does not offend me. I wish I could eat mine maybe later when I have had chickens for a while I could. The chicken sounds so yummy even tho I can't really eat much.
