I got the supplies delivered today for our new coop, cinderblocks and a couple 2 x 8 sill pieces and mortar. I broke ground on the project a couple of days ago, digging out the old foundation so as to have a level surface to build on. Still waiting for the zoning permit though so I won't be setting the blocks until that comes in the mail, just in case. Luckily I don't need a building permit too as it's for agriculture. But there's nothing like shelling out $40 to have someone tell you that you can build where you already know you can.

Also, just finished our second hatch and we now have 5 wheaten marans, 1 coronation sussex and 5 barnyard mixes to add to the first hatch of 11 chicks. It's crazy the difference in size already! I have the brooders separated by some hardware cloth so they can see each other. The 3 1/2wk olds want to eat the newbies and the newbies want to snuggle under all those feathers on the 3 1/2 wk-olds. It's cute... in a way. I'm seeing a lot of boys in the first set of barnyard mixes but I can't tell the sex on the buff brahmas yet. It's the waiting game.

I was reading that the Midget Turkeys aren't as suseptable to the blackhead problem as other turkeys are.

It probably would have been cheaper to have someone else build ours, if you factor the cost of materials and how long it took us, but it was a "bonding experience". Haha, as if we need more of those. I guess you can vote once a day until April 22, so anymore votes would be appreciated. I will stop bugging you guys about it now.

On another note, my fancy blue mottled cochin from The Cochin Coop is now laying, woohoo! I was so forlorn thinking of spending that much on a chicken, and not seeing any eggs. My serama hen has also been laying eggs that vary in size from hummingbird to bluebird eggs, but none of them have yolks and seem small even for her. I know if I want to get some purebred cochin eggs I need to get my serama roo out of there soon, and figure out how to AI from my mottled rooster Orion. Unless anyone wants some frizzle serama/bantam cochin offspring haha. Orion is so fluffy and short-legged there is no way he is going to be successful on his own. I think I will try when my husband is not around, as he seems to think it is the funniest thing ever and I don't need him laughing over my shoulder.

I think next year I might try Midgets. I have to build one more coop first and get the shed done this year first.

ALSO, Is there any interest here in yokohamas or pheonixes? I will be putting shipped eggs in a bator this weekend (Sunday), and depending on how many hatch, I will be bringing them to CS if there is interest for 4H kids. They are coming from Decoyman's stock out of W.V. He's sent me an assortment of what he's got on his farm. If any of you know who I am talking about, then you know he's got some quality birds. If not, here's a few pics of his beauties...

I understand that a lot of show birds are done that way to protect the feathers. Not sure if I'd try it, but ya never know. Whole new meaning to the chicken whisperer.

No she didn't have a swollen crop, I thought the other did but in the morning that was gone. All the others seem ok so far.

ha ha, i told you EE's were a trip! Mine are exasperatingly smart; they constantly come up with crap to get in trouble with! (And my pet EE from my pet hen that died has already decided to like her car rides, and will wait for them (car rides = special treats just for her) LOL. No pooping in the car, either, even in the carrier!
