So this might just be wishful thinking, but I have a hen who was acting like she wanted an egg to sit on but there was nothing under her. I happened to be in the coop when one of my other girls laid one, so I moved it over next to our hen Fancy (the one I hope is wanting to sit) I just set it next to her... She immediately rolled it under her self and settled in...anyone with experience have any thoughts? I haven't had a broody hen since I was a kid with chickens...like I say though, she might not even be...I think they need a sign they turn on to tell us!

my girls get all maternal right before and sometimes after they lay eggs; you will know she's considering it if it's an all afternoon thing, if she's setting the nest at nightfall then it is real.

I would set some golf balls or whatnot under her, sometimes they start and stop a few times before they set for real; then the eggs that they sat on for a day or two are no good. That would allow you to gather eggs too.

Hello from White Lake. We just purchased some little chicks from TSC for our kids and were wondering if there is a place that sells chickens (not chicks) around the metro area? We would like to get a flock going a little faster for eggs

How many are you looking to get? I may have a few extra that I could spare, my husband just started a new job so we lost some customers and have eggs coming out our ears. I have barred rocks and a production red that are 13 months old; $10 each. I'm in Durand and could possibly meet you half way.

I don't know what to make of this weather. At first i was cold but happy that perhaps we might actually have a fruit crop this year, but now seeing all the fields here getting full of water i can only wonder how long it will be before the farmers will be able to get out and work the fields even. Drat.

Anyone heard the latest on the possible fruit though????

Good to see you, Sam! Don't think you can catch any fish in this weather. All the rivers and creeks are overflowing here, too.

Very wet out there.

Someone dumped a pit bull on our street and was hanging around Krisrose's place. We tried to get close to it, but it's really fearful of humans. It is not aggressive towards us or other animals. Unfortunately I think the storm scared it away. A neighbor gave us a number for a rescue, so hoping the dog will come back and we can get him taken care of. Poor thing. Why do people think they can dump their animals in the country??

I agree, our road is flooded at both ends. and my chicken run is a muddy mess. At least they can free range and get out of the mud. hope the hawks stay away

I let mine out yesterday to stay dry in the barn (their coop leaks and their run is flooded) and what did they do? They went and stood out in the deluge of a thunderstorm, wind, cold and lightning. That's gratitude for ya!

I haven't heard specifically about the orchards but my fruit trees are holding back so there's nothing to freeze, should we get a hard one. I'm not far from the orchards either. On the other hand, I'm curious as to the length of the growing season if things don't pick up soon. May be some late harvests this year.

We must have gotten a ton of rain last night. I had a "tented" tarp over the dog kennel I had the peacocks in...poor things....I thought I had it pretty taught, but apparently not. The whole thing had caved in, snapped the board holding the roof up, bent the walls of the kennel all up (and of course once they're bent they're worthless)...ugh! So I was late to work today cause I had to drain the tarp ... and try to bend back and re build the kennel door and brace the panels to keep them secure and safe for now. Luckily the birds were all calm and didn't panic and try to fly out. They've been getting better about relaxing when I'm out there with them, but I really need to sell these birds! Anyone? $500.00 for all 6 OBO? (3 pairs)

That's terrible, poor puppy! I think people assume that because we country folks have a bunch of animals that we are likely animal lovers who will take in their unwanted pet. It's probably true to some extent, Lord knows we've taken in our fair share of stray dogs and cats over the years. However, I think those dumped animals are just as likely to meet a nasty end by car, shotgun, wild animal, or LGD. Maybe they think they are doing their animal a favor by giving it a chance to run wild instead of taking it to the shelter where they will most likely put it down. The sad truth is that being euthanized at a shelter is probably a lot better than freezing, starving, and being scared until you die from the elements or are killed by some less than pleasant means.

I hope he comes around again so that you can help him out.
