Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

RaZ-- we all know what you are up against is total crap. I want to tell you that I don't think this conviction should really affect your ability to Volunteer in the future. It's not a Felony, right? I don't see why there would be any issue at all in regards to you continuing to Volunteer. And Volunteers make the world go around. So please don't give up or feel discouraged. The truth is that many people in this world have mis-placed priorities and as long as you are taking good care of your Flock, then you should be able to keep chickens! And we all know it! Thinking of you today.

On another note, I must muck out my outdoor pen ASAP. It is still soggy. I will have lots of mulch for the trees and garden today! :) Too bad my aching joints don't feel like cooperating. I don't think think I can manage the mud floor another day. Last night I seriously thought about offering my Pekins for rehoming, just to ease the cleanup.

snowflake, do you mean a bat? it could possibly fly out on its own after dark, if it did you could quickly cover the vent over. If if not you will have to open the area up and take him out - I usually try to trap bats in a small container, like a small canning jar, to take them outside and release them.

Well I am glad someone got something. My DH is turkeyless AGAIN this year.. I call him the not so great Asian hunter lol I think we need to raise turkeys and let him practice on calling them in:/

So far no turkey for my hubby either. Today he's taking off from work at lunch and going out with a buddy of his. Here's to hoping.

Yesterday evening we took a family walk out through the back pastures, through the woods and to the bean field. DH was looking for signs of game and DD was picking flowers. I was noticing how many spiders were in the grass. So. Many. Spiders. Yuck. I said to DH "look at all of them! There are thousands of spiders, it's like a horror movie!"
He replies "maybe you should get some guineas"
When I bring some home I'll remind him that it was his idea.

1muttsfan & snowflake--

About bats. Several years ago I was sitting watching tv (at night) when suddenly my indoor only cat showed up with a bat in its mouth. I totally freaked out and got the bat outside with a broom. But what my Vet told me afterward is: A) a bat will normally always leave and go out at night. Then you plug up your hole so it can't get back in. B) You must be very careful, because bats are carriers of Rabies. C) If you get one, you are not supposed to release it, you are supposed to send it for testing.

So, in my mind it's better if you can just let the bat go out on its own. Don't try to catch it. Google around for the Bat Conservancy Guy, I think he was out of Livingston County somewhere. I'm sorry but I can't recall his name. Nice guy, Smart too.

We have the 2x4x4 welded wire around our back yard, keeps chickens in and things that are not inclined to climb out,
That is the fence I am talking about. Will it at least help keep the deer out? I know they can jump over it but will it at least be a small deterrent? Tired of being scared half to death when late at night in the summer I sit by the door wall playing on my laptop and the deer snort into the screen door. Last summer I almost messed my pants! I did however jump about a foot in the air from a sitting position. I looked out and he was actually on my patio looking me eye to eye not more then a foot away from me.

so any how when my DH got up I had him hold the net( chicken stuff comes in so handy) and I with my leather gloves on slowly opened the door and as he was mostly on 1 side and not inclined to go any were, I was able to reach around and grab him with both hands. Let him go outside he just kind of slid down the the ground and of course BIG raindrops were coming down. I don't see him now I think he slipped under the deck, so I hope he is ably to get to a good place later. .....not fond of bats in my house as I know they can carry rabies, how ever outsid,,,, they eat LOTS of insects
what a perfect pic. you should enter it in a contest
love it, "but you told me to get them"

It should help, I do not get dear in the back yard, but yours may be older then ours as the front is not fenced and we don't see them often there either. Big dog will keep them away too
