I so wish I was able to attend CS yesterday. A huge THANK YOU to ladyrsanti for bringing my chickens in for me & bringing home the BCM pullet!

And thanks to Wynette for the pullet... or should I call her hen now? I've received 2 eggs from her today. There was one waiting for me this morning, and another this afternoon. Poor girl, she must have been holding that in all day yesterday from all the traveling & hanging out at Chickenstock. My son has named her "Penny" & I think that's perfect.

I hope everybody enjoys the silkie chicks they got from me. I'm sorry, aside from granny hoffman, I don't know who they all were. And I hope Trefoil enjoys the rooster.

So, update on me. I'm WHOOPED. My girlfriends have been taking it to the extreme, & I love them for it. I had asked them to "keep me busy, keep my mind off things" (in regards to my grandma passing).. and they have come through full force. Over the last week, when I wasn't doing things that needed to be done for my grandma's arrangements, I have been pushed to my limit with physical labor. I have cleaned out coops, cleaned up shingles, raked runs, cleaned up shingles, cleaned out the garage top to bottom, hedged the sidewalks, cleaned up shingles, pulled weeds in the flower garden, hauled & dumped the wheel barrel I swear a billion times, bred the horses (twice), bailed hay... hauled hay... chucked hay... stacked hay..., pulled weeds around the shrubs & house & under the bay window, cleaned up shingles, ran errands to practically every store in W. MI (so it seems), cleaned the porch, carted chickens around, cleaned the house inside & out, moved the goat pen (twice), swept the drive, pulled lots more weeds, plus we did the food for all the shingles crews for the whole weekend, plus fed the hay crew and cleaned up after all those. I'll tell you... if I have to do a load of laundry I'm gonna pass out. Darn, I really need to get a load of laundry done... did I mention doing hay & cleaning up shingles? Yes? Ok good. But all this has been very good for me. It was exactly what I needed and I'm blessed to have 2 best friends that would put their life on hold in a heartbeat like that for me. I think I've managed to get over the hard hurdle and have started to heal. I'm able to start focusing on all the great things about about my grandma with a smile now instead of tears. I'm doing much better.

Oh... & the roof is darn near done. Phew! Just a few little bits, cap & some tar at the chimney, etc left to do. I ended up having to buy 3 more bundles of shingles today... 93 bundles of shingles! My word.

Ok so last week I removed water from my ducks for the overnight just to try to help out the dirt floor pen.

Can you set the waterer in a shallow pan or containment thingy? Like a boot tray?

Ducks are messy drinkers and they like to play in the water. Some containment may be in order.
I would rather see water available at all times than see a bird go thirsty.

Does anyone know if MSU does blood testing for Mareks or other avian diseases? My pullet is recovering from whatever ailed her, it seems, but I would still like to have testing done if only for my peace of mind. And to find out if I should bring my Welsummers home from Davison . . . they are only a couple of months old now so I don't want to expose them unless I'm sure it's safe.

I had my first encounter with a neighbors dog killing a chicken? 911 called, reports taken, cops have talked with me and the neighbor.
I have one definate loss, one of my Chantecler was killed. And a Brahma is missing. What are my rights as a chicken owner?? Where do I go to look at what the law says? I know many of you have probably already had this problem, I just wanna know before anything else happens. The cops told me because it was a HUSKY, and it has tasted blood, it will probably be back if it gets the chance. I DO NOT want the owners to lose their dog, but I am not optimistic about this at all. My husband did not stand with me, was more sympathetic with the dog owner and was mad at me bacause I call the cops and reported it.
But I'd gone down and spoke with the neighbors and told them if it came back I'd have the shotgun out and not 2 minutes after I got home, I looked out the window and the dog was back. I was out in the yard with a handgun when the neighbors pulled up, yelling at me about the gun while the dog was eyeing up the rest of my chickens.
I do let my chickens out of a chain link fenced yard to run the rest of the yard, because thats where the grass is. What am I to do now. I've been in tears, had the run in with the neighbor, spoken to state police and had words with my husband. I feel like I'm all alone

Sec. 18. A law enforcement officer may kill a dog determined to be molesting wildlife and not hunting as
defined in this act.

Sec. 19. Any person including a law enforcement officer may kill any dog which he sees in the act of
pursuing, worrying, or wounding any livestock or poultry or attacking persons, and there shall be no liability
on such person in damages or otherwise, for such killing. Any dog that enters any field or enclosure which is
owned by or leased by a person producing livestock or poultry, outside of a city, unaccompanied by his owner
or his owner's agent, shall constitute a trespass, and the owner shall be liable in damages. Except as provided
in this section, it shall be unlawful for any person, other than a law enforcement officer, to kill or injure or
attempt to kill or injure any dog which bears a license tag for the current year.

287.280 Loss or damage to livestock or poultry caused by dogs; complaint; examination;
summons; proceedings; killing of dog; liability of owner or keeper.
Sec. 20. If a person sustains any loss or damage to livestock or poultry that is caused by dogs, or if the
livestock of a person is necessarily destroyed because of having been bitten by a dog, the person or his or her
agent or attorney may complain to the township supervisor or a township officer or other qualified person
designated by the township board of the township in which the damage occurred. The complaint shall be in
writing, signed by the person making it, and shall state when, where, what, and how much damage was done,
and, if known, by whose dog or dogs. The township supervisor or a township officer or other qualified person
designated by the township board shall at once examine the place where the alleged damage was sustained
and the livestock or poultry injured or killed, if practicable. He or she shall also examine under oath, or
affirmation, any witness called. After making diligent inquiry in relation to the claim, the township supervisor
or a township officer or other person designated by the township board shall determine whether damage has
been sustained and the amount of that damage, and, if possible, who was the owner of the dog or dogs that did
the damage. If during the course of the proceedings the owner of the dog causing the loss or damage to the
livestock becomes known, the township supervisor or a township officer or other person designated by the
township board shall request the district court judge to immediately issue a summons against the owner
commanding him or her to appear before the township supervisor or township officer or other person
designated by the township board and show cause why the dog should not be killed. The summons may be
served anyplace within the county in which the damage occurred, and shall be made returnable not less than 2
nor more than 6 days from the date stated in the summons and shall be served at least 2 days before the time
of appearance mentioned in the summons. Upon the return day fixed in the summons the township supervisor
or township officer or other person designated by the township board shall proceed to determine whether the
loss or damage to the livestock was caused by the dog, and if so he or she shall immediately notify the sheriff
or the animal control officer of the county of that fact and upon notification the sheriff or the animal control
officer shall kill the dog wherever found. Any owner or keeper of the dog or dogs shall be liable to the county
in a civil action for all damages and costs paid by the county on any claim as provided in this section.

Sec. 22. Justices of the peace, for the services rendered under this act, shall receive $4.00 for each case,
and 10 cents per mile for each mile traveled, to be paid by the claimant in each case. In all cases where
damages are awarded, the fees paid by claimants shall be included in the amount of such damages.

287.283 Payment for amount of loss or damage; costs; investigation.
Sec. 23. (1) When the county board of commissioners of the county receives a report of the township
supervisor or other person designated by the township board pursuant to section 21, if it appears from the
report that a certain amount of damage has been sustained by the claimant, the county board of commissioners
shall immediately draw their order on the treasurer of the county in favor of the claimant for the amount of
loss or damage which the claimant has sustained, together with all necessary and proper costs incurred. If the
claim filed with the board appears from the report filed to be illegal or unjust, the board may make an
investigation of the case and make its award accordingly.
(2) An amount awarded pursuant to this section shall be paid by the county out of its general fund. A
payment shall not be made for any item which has already been paid by the owner of the dog or dogs doing
the injury. If a payment is made by the county for any livestock or poultry bitten by a dog or dogs, the
payment shall not exceed the amount allowed by the county board of commissioners.

I'm NOT a lawyer and this is NOT legal advice.
However, I think that your yard is your yard and you can protect property. I believe that "castle law" says so, but I would have to do some research.

Two things about this bother me: 1) is that the cops seems to justify a loose dog as OK and 2) that your DH is less than supportive.

I don't mean to disparage your husband, but I think he should have stood with you against the trespass onto your property. That is just my opinion.

Oh my goodness I am so sorry you are going through this, why can't people take care of their dogs. Your suppose to like it when the dumb dog comes on YOUR property and kills something?

If I would've been in your situation and saw the dog killing my birds, the dog would be no more. Just my opinion.
