Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I had that same problem with one of my Isa browns. It's like she went mad or something. She just spent all day attacking everyone. Tried all the same things you did. She met her ultimate demise

but for the best for the flock it had to happen. Everyone is pretty peaceful now for the most part. My other isa is just grumpy all the time but not like this one was.

Good to know it's happened to others. Thanks for sharing that!

Yeah!! We're going to TN for a week!! I just love it there! Not that any one here will miss me, but I'll be in the mountains of Gatlingburg! It's absolutely beautiful there.
Have a good week, all..
Of course we will miss you Rose!

And I am more than a little bit jealous that you are going to TN. It's so pretty there. Soon I will be heading to SC.

Rose, your not being on the thread, even for a few days, is cause for much sadness.
DITTO!
I am missing my broody hen and 4 of her chicks this morning. 3 of her chicks somehow got into the pen with my 3 week olds, but fluffy, 2 Marans chicks (of course!!!!) and my 2 cuckoo silkie chicks are nowhere to be found. There are a few feathers in the pen and a few outside the run. I'm guessing hawk. Ugh. I am so bummed!!! Will probably go wander around the field to see if I can find a body or hear any peeps. This really sucks.
So sorry

I have large hands yet these two eggs just about fills it. The brown Welsummer egg is almost a jumbo on the scale and the ameraucana egg on the left dwarfs it.

ISA Brown hens are a reasonably calm bird that excels at egg production. They are not a good choice in a mixed flock. They are a prime example of the adage "birds of a feather flock together". While they do well with other ISAs they tend to dominate other breeds and are very aggressive.

really? i didn't know that. i have 3 ISAs with 3 BO and 2 BR and don't have any issues. i'm pretty sure one of the buffs is the boss, but i have never seen any scuffles or anything, so it is hard to say for sure. they all seem to get along just fine. i hope they don't become an issue when my 15 chicks (about 5 weeks old right now) join the girls in the main part of the coop. maybe having them out there in an enclosure inside the coop will help. they haven't bothered the one chick that thinks she should be able to roost with the year old hens at night yet (she keeps finding new ways out of the enclosure that i then have to find ways to block off).

My fertile eggs didn't arrive today as scheduled. They were shipped from Tennessee on Wednesday. Do you think they will still be viable if I get them tomorrow? I'm a little nervous about it.

Normally I collect eggs for a week before placing them in the incubator but I have sucessfully hatched eggs that were 14 days old. I would image your shipped eggs should be okay. Just remember to let them sit and stablized for 24 hour before starting incubation

Oh good! I didn't know that about letting them sit for 24 hours. Thanks!!!

I just don't plug the turner in for 3 or 4 days on shipped eggs, but I also have a poor record with shipped eggs.

Anyone have any tips on getting my broilers through 1 more week? We found a dead one this morning.

I told DH this morning that we might have to move the tractors back to the woods so they don't bake in the heat. Stupid weather. Moving them will involve putting all of the chickens in the back of the pickup, moving the tractors and then unloading the chickens. Doesn't THAT sound like fun?

I have 2 broodys again. The grumpy broody who tried to kill the chicks I put under her last week, and my green-laying pullet. Neither of them like me to peek under them, or let me feel underneath for eggs like my sweet silkie hen did. I can't really hatch any more chicks out until I think out what we've already got. I don't have a wire-bottom cage to stick them in, and I tried throwing the first broody off her nest, taking all her eggs, locking her out of the coop during the day for 3 days, and as soon as she can get back in that nest box she does. SO, any tips on breaking these girls other than letting them hatch a few out?
