Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Good morning...
Well, I wish my garden was to the point of "quick weeding". Spent 5 hours in it yesterday & only got about 1/5th done. Hopefully today I can finish the rest & get it to the point where quick daily maintenance will keep the weeds in check. What I did get done yesterday looks great :). But boy is my back sore from all of the bending :D

I missed all the fireworks last night. Fell asleep early...I do love professional ones, though.

Hope everyone had a fun & safe 4th!

*yawn* Good Morning Everyone. I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable 4th.
I saw more of the fireworks than I planned on - spent the evening out looking for my sister's dog. He had climbed their fence and run away with all the commotion from the noise, etc. They scoured the neighborhood for 2 hours before I got there. Turns out he was only 2 houses away - he had fallen into a neighbors pool and was possibly stuck under the cover. He somehow climbed out and was a soaking, shaking, stinking mess. Poor guy! He's only 9 months old. This could have ended very, very badly. I can't believe they left him outside to begin with . . . They got a bit of an earful from me (they had adopted through a rescue I belong to - and a puppy that had been in my care since he was 1 week old). But he was found and is now safe. A lesson was learned. He's a smart, smart dog who's talents apparently include climbing their new fence!

On a much lighter note, I met with a fellow BYC member yesterday and came home with 3 beautiful Indian Runner ducks. Thank you Taylor!

I live in Michigan, I am starting to breed Russian chickens as well as a few other unique looking birds. I want to get into russian breeding seriously. I love any kind of unique looking bird especially Russian breeds.

I'm wondering if any one in Michigan is into the same chicken breeds I am??

I currently have a new flock of Russian Orloffs, and will be getting some pairs of Appenzeller Spitzhauben, and Black Sumatra. Also getting some Polish bantam for ornamental. I would like to get BLR Wyandottes, and 2 or 3 Sillican buttercup just for fun.
I've been trying to my hands on some non-hatchery blrw for a year now. I got some eggs from a seller in Illinois this spring and hatched 4.......and only got 1 girl out of it. *sigh* SO, if you're going to be wanting to get a cockerel, I'll have 2 extra in the fall. I know Cedar Creek Hatchery in Twin Lakes has them listed, but the hen in their pictures has a single comb, and I'm not overly impressed with what I see in the pics. I might try again with some eggs in the fall or next spring. Otherwise, I've had no luck locating any of those. I know someone in the Thumb area has them.....but that's a 5 hour drive for me. :/

Wondering if anyone recognizes this poor girl, if so please PM me. Thank You! This scared tri ***** aussie was found this morn in Lapeer MI off M24.
Maybe she is microchipped?? We are getting a puppy in September and maybe she lost her collar. I have seen collars designed to release if they snag on something. I hope she wasn't abandoned!!

Yeah!! We're going to TN for a week!! I just love it there! Not that any one here will miss me, but I'll be in the mountains of Gatlingburg! It's absolutely beautiful there.
Have a good week, all..

Good morning! Back to the broody hens___ I have the dog crates right in the chicken house, so it's a short night time move for them. BE CAREFUL about the door screen or divider openings; tiny newly hatched chicks that get out will be killed! I raise Belgian dUccle bantams, they are tiny tiny babies. Two broodies may fight and kill each other's chicks if they are confined together. I also had a disaster with a broody in a cage small enough that a racoon could reach in REALLY BAD episode that time! I try very hard to prevent errant hens from brooding outside; way to many losses that way. Theres no night light in summer out there. Good luck! Mary

I am missing my broody hen and 4 of her chicks this morning. 3 of her chicks somehow got into the pen with my 3 week olds, but fluffy, 2 Marans chicks (of course!!!!) and my 2 cuckoo silkie chicks are nowhere to be found. There are a few feathers in the pen and a few outside the run. I'm guessing hawk. Ugh. I am so bummed!!! Will probably go wander around the field to see if I can find a body or hear any peeps. This really sucks.
