Well we just walked through the field, checking under all the shrubs and trees for a little white chicken, and then walked through the edge of the woods looking for feathers. The fence is completely undisturbed, no holes, and all of the other chicks/chickens in that run are fine. Why, when we lose chickens to predators does it ALWAYS have to be my kids' chickens???
We did find the body of one of the silkie chicks a few yards from the run, dead of course. I'm thinking that she was protecting her chicks and getting them under her wings and the picked up. Chicks are only 5 days old, so really tiny and are hard to see on the ground in tall grass/cover. We will be putting the netting up over the run when DH and our oldest get done hauling firewood, and he's already talking about cooping everyone up when we're going to be gone for the day as we were yesterday (left at 630am, came home at 830 to change into pants and get sweatshirts and go to the fireworks) and the dogs aren't out.
DH said to start looking for replacements within about a 2 hour drive, so I'm off to check craigslist. If anyone has any while silkie hens or marans chicks within a 2 hour drive of the Traverse City area, shoot me a pm.
