Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Wow, I haven't been asked to join any farmer's markets. That would be an honor (even at $75). I just wanted a place to attempt to sell because rarely does anybody buy from my shop on Etsy. I sold more at CS than I had all winter online. It is hard to give up the weekends though, especially summer weekends. Who knows, maybe no one will show tomorrow. No telling.

You could try out the Fulton Street Artisan Market sometime - http://www.grartmarket.com/. I think it is $10-$15 for an 8 foot table, on Sundays 11am-3pm. It is the only place I have set up before, although I've been invited to other craft fairs that are more expensive. I haven't seen any other people selling the wool yarn, so it might work out well for you to have the only item of your kind there. You'd just have to fill out a paper and send it in to get a card and vendor number. I really like that you don't have to bring your own table or canopy.

Sad day, I lost my Snowball to heat stroke. She somehow got herself in the big birds run and couldn't find her way out or to the water. After we found her we gave her water and put ice packs around her but it was too late. It was not that hot today so I wasn't worried about letting her out. She sticks to her little yard and coop and rarely leaves it. She follows the rooster around most of the time.

So sorry to hear that! She was gorgeous!

how many hens can we keep in our backyard.
well, that's a hard question to answer.

First off, do you live in an area that "allows" chickens? Many cities and some neighborhoods (or subdivisions) don't allow chickens, have restrictions on how many chickens you can have, or dis-allow roosters. Depending on that, you may receive tickets, fines, or even criminal charges (whether they are correct in these matters is a very hot debate and you may wish to familiarize yourself with the MI Right to Farm Act if you live in an urban area).

Those things aside,

How big is your back yard? Are you keeping large fowl or bantam chickens? How big is your coop? How big is your run, or are you free ranging?

The general rule of thumb is that for every large-fowl chicken you should plan for 4sqft of coop space AND 10sqft of run space. Bantam chickens can deal with about half of that. Some people say your need MORE space than that, others say you can get away with LESS space than that.

I got woken up from deep sleep around 330am - strange noise. Thought domething getting in to the chickens house. Turned on the lights, but saw nothing out the window. Ended up being from this:
400

Probably cant tell from the picture, but the oak tree would take 3 of me putting my chest up against it stretching my arms out & touching fingertip to fingertip.

Yikes! I'm glad everything is okay, though!
