I think that someone should write to the MDARD and Ag Commissioner's that this is an example of the benefits of small scale farm operations.

Hello Everyone! I'm Tracy I live in Morrice MI and I'm new to the chicken world. We just recently finished our chicken coop and bought 6 laying hens. (3 Isa browns, 1 barred rock, and 2 buff orpingtons) they are 5 months to a year old and all from the same owner. We have had them for 4 days now and are getting 3 eggs a day. I'm thinking that the other 3 hens got a little stressed out so I'm hoping soon they will start laying again since i was told by the couple we bought them from that they all layed well. I'm sure this heat we have been having isn't helping either. I just wanted to pop in and say hello and i look forward to learning a lot from all of you. :)

This chick hatched less than 24 hours ago. I am watching this one and the other 2 for a fellow BYC member who is on vacation. I picked her up from the incubator and was home by 4:30 PM. The chick was given water (did the beak dip and wet finger trick so I know she is getting water).

The chick was apparently walking fine on the screen in the incubator and I brought it home in a box, put her in with the other chicks in the brooder. Checking to make sure that she is not being picked on, I noticed her right foot sticking out a bit and she was sitting on her left foot. I'm a bit concerned about splay so I picked her up to take a closer look. She has extra (weird) forked toes on her left foot.

Does she have splay leg? And should I be concerned about the forked toes?

Welcome Tracy! I really hope you made your chicken coop bigger than you needed. Chickens can be addicting very quickly.

Raz... the toes are normal for that breed. Do a band aide hobble on it, and add some electroltyes to their water.
Well that is good news. Her other foot doesn't have that forked toe thing. So I was concerned. I've never seen toes like that. You learn something new everyday. Thanks.

Trying to get some band-aid support fashioned. My big hands and her tiny legs are going to call for some finesse.
