Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Well it seems I will never have any guinea's none of my eggs hatched not one. They were suppose to hatch Sunday, I don't know what happened the bator ran really good temp right on humidity great what went wrong I have 24 eggs and no keets :(

I agree with Candy...the chickens really are a riot & sweet. 5 months ago I could of never imagined...

Candy...Btw...I have THREE Roos !! One of my NHR "pullets" turned into a roo. And HE is my baby. I knew when I got the EEs it was straight run, so I guess I lucked out with a 50/50 split!

I just cannot believe ur baby isn't crowing as both my EE Roos started at 8 weeks!

I can't believe he isn't crowing too...but someone in the Egger thread brought up that "he" may be half and half! I never thought that was possible, but apparently 1 in 10000 chickens can be half hen, half roo. I wonder if this is the case? I haven't researched enough on this situation yet...but he only "peeps" and we got all of the EE's the 8th of April, so we know they are 16 weeks old now...very strange! We went for all pullet bins and paid extra even though we knew it isn't guaranteed they would be all pullets, but the "reds" were advertised as pullets and so were the EE's...I guess out of 8 chicks, one "Roo" isn't bad odds...
and if TwoTone is a gynandromorph then we truly have a very rare bird

I still have the rouen duck up for grabs if anybody would like him. He's 15 weeks today. He gets along with our other drake & ducks just fine. DH only wants 1 drake for the 2 girls, so the 2nd boy needs a new home. If we can't rehome him in the next few weeks, he will be processed. Let me know. (If you want him for your freezer, I'm fine with that too.)

Here's a picture. The one that needs to go is the one walking behind the other drake...

WOW! No kidding??!! Wouldn't THAT be interesting! I must say, TwoTone's comb, while bigger than the pullets', is NOWHERE the size of my EE roos', and my birds are only 1 week older than yours!

what exactly do you ask for when you go to buy it? is it seed grain, feed, or what? my DH and i want to start growing some too but want to make sure we get the right thing.

Ask for Barley FEED seed. Organic if they got it. (generally will cost more though for organic, other wise you could get GMO seed) Feed seed is to be fed directly to live stock as a food source.

Barley SEED, seed is for planting in the ground and could be coated with something to prevent mold and bugs.... may or may not have a coating, just ask.

All Newbies, I'm sure you will become an expert at chicken math in no time, I went from a small flock of 12 Faverolles 4 years ago, to 60 and a full incubator full of beulanger Fav's that go into lockdown tomorrow Welcome All ..... ~Fancy Favie~

I need to talk to you about getting a few fav hen chicks. I'm sending all my old hens to freezer camp and will have one lonely roo friday. I had gotten 5 fav (hatchery) hens this spring and none of them made it with the combination of the issues I had this year and some due to their own stupidity. I'm looking to get 3 hen chicks.

Just let me know ages and I can see what I have available, Or if anyone is interested in hatching eggs let me know I have over 30 that need to be set ASAP 24 are possibly being sent out this afternoon, I'm averaging 15 a day and with a full incy and no broody's i'm kinda stuck LOL

Your welcome. I have a 3 month old SF cockerel (that was sold to me as a day-old pullet, lol) who I hope will be as gorgeous as your rooster. I call him 'Boots' because of his heavy foot feathers. The actual pullet that came with him has very light leg feathering. But she has the cutest puffy cheek feathers/muffs. I wasn't planning on having any more roosters to challenge my Cruiser but Boots is too cute not to keep. Unfortunately, I have a Welsummer cockerel that I will probably be keeping, too. So I guess I'm building another coop and run, lol. Chicken math might as well shoot me in the head right now!!!! I'm a goner . . .
Let me know when you get that coop done for your Fav I might have a few pullets available if your interested

I would be very grateful to learn from you if it's not too much of an imposition, Opa. I hate to have you do it if you were planning on taking them in to be processed, though... Be honest about how much of a pain in the neck/time suck that would be for you. There is no real rush for me to learn this now--I just know sooner or later, I'll have to do it again and I need to do it with more skill than I had the first time... Or perhaps I just had the Rasputin of roosters. No, sadly, I fear it was my poor technique.

I used this method when the dogs got into our meaties. It went pretty well, even with my dull knives. I did cervical dislocation, and then chopped their heads off after they were done twitching and hung them up by their legs to "drain" for about 10min before I skinned them. Don't know if all that was necessary, but I did it anyway.

Good morning everyone. I haven't been around much at all, I think I just ran out of steam in the poultry arena. But I've got chicks and keets hatching which amazes me as we lost power for 36 hours last week after the "non-tornado" ripped through town and had to emergency transport the incubator to the in-laws' farm over bumpy dirt roads to be able to power it back up. I had it covered in blankets till we got there and it was probably turned off for about 5 hours yet only dropped about 3 degrees. I do wonder if I would have had a better hatch if this hadn't happened. There are 8 chicks and 10 keets in this photo. 5 more chicks fluffing in the incubator

Anyone else up north get hit by a similar storm on the 18th? They won't call it a tornado but with 2 inches of hail, hundreds, if not thousands of trees down, some on houses and cars, power out for days for some, it was darned close! AFAIK no one was hurt, at least not in my town.
