Thanks all...

Laura! So very awesome! Congrats!

Candy, very sorry... I know how you feel. It's even worse when it's your own dogs. I am glad the dogs were not mean, and you were able to catch them and hold them till animal control came. I think recompence is in order from the dogs owners.

Lisa... Bubbly eyes, not good. You can have bubbly eye and no other symptoms for an infection. You can try vetrimicin (thinks thats how it is spelled) or just go for the gold and get a bottle of tylan 50. Depending on the size of the hen, 1/2 ml (cc) for a standard size bird and 1/4 ml(cc) for a banty. You can give orally, or injection. I do orally for 5-7 days. You'll need a bag of needles to do it. I just use diabetic needles that I had from my dad. Anyway... good luck, keep the eyes clear and the nostrils too and watch the other birds for spreading. I just had a bought of that with one of my girls. Her eyes crusted so bad she couldn't open them. Nothing else. No lung rattles, but those bubbles dried up, and even down her beak and beard... She's right good now. Fat pullet. Another month and she should be laying. She was the only one too...

Oh, so many sad chicken losses in the past few days. I'm sorry, chicken friends.

HH, congratulations!! Cute announcement.

Yay for new egg layers! Our d'uccle laid her first today, and my 7 year old found it. She was SO SO excited!

Thanks all...

I've got Tylan. Injectable. So how many ccs exactly? She's a very athletic lean ee. I've seen her jump 7 ft to the top of the the grow out run. It's been awhile so just right under the skin, right? For 3 days? She's 5 months approx. thank you for your help. It's always something with these girls! Just when I feel like a good chicken parent....

I am so upset...just had a couple of golden retrievers I have never seen before romp through our yard.  One had a choke collar the other had no collar

They got our EE Bratty...:hit

iamfivewire is burying her right now. I had just walked inside to use the bathroom when I saw a large dog running in the back, screamed to Brett "theres a dog in the yard"  Then we heard screams, I ran outside barefoot and saw two large retrievers bounding across the street with a bird hanging from their mouth...I screamed "NO" at the dogs and they dropped the bird to run towards us.  They were wagging their tails but it was too late.

The police just took the dogs away to the animal control center ... but I am so sad about what happened.  Poor little Bratty, they took a big chunk out of her back. I picked her up from the neighbors yard, lots of feathers all over...

It took us two hours to find the other three EE's in the woods.  Brett took the dogs to our eight foot enclosed patio and locked them in while we secured the chickens.

again I am faced with changing my signature line...sigh...

Oh, Candy & Iam5....
I am soo sorry about Bratty.....
All these dog losses are just breaking my heart....
So sorry....

Was there an all night party around here? Sheesh, and I slept right through it!

Congrats to HH, & so sorry to Nova, Candy & iamfivewire.

Lisa, I have the eggs collected & will likely be setting them today. I have a broody australorp that has been determined to hog the nest box for a couple of weeks now. She's never hatched eggs before though so I can't say how efficient she is, but her sister just hatched some this spring and did a wonderful job. The 2 girls are very much alike, so I'm hopeful for this lady. "Shiver" is her name. I'm thinking about setting the eggs under her, rather than in my incubator. Sound ok?

So, I think my brahma pullets are starting to lay. Their pullet eggs are the smallest little things!! Even smaller than a silkie egg. My DD keeps baby talking to them. LOL. I've been getting about 10 eggs a day right now, and still have 6 pullets left to mature to laying age. Really, I think I've lost count on how many hens/pullets I have out there! Hmm.... **starts counting on fingers, ...add in toes... dang, grabs the calculator, double dang... the calculator doesn't do chicken math!!** I really need to get this figured out. Maybe after a couple more cups of coffee. I might have to go out there & physically count them. Well, at least I know exactly how many roosters I have, 2! One Brahma, and one Old English Bantam. Phew, at least that wasn't hard.
