Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

You (all of us) should have some blood stop powder handy. You can get some at TSC, FFH, most good pet supply stores or on-line.

Maybe we should revisit some animal first-aid kit must haves. We have discussed this in the past but there are new people who could benefit.

Thanks.
I actually thought I has most of a first aid kit. That wasn't on the list.

Just went back out & cuz they were all in neighbors yard chowing down.

Blackie 's leg is a total mess of blood.

Going to capture him, get him in house & run to TSC.

Anything besides blood stop powder while I'm out chasing him down?

Well, you have Blu-Kote already.

I like to keep a few things handy in addition to that such as electrolyte powder, Wazine, nail-clippers, butterfly wound closures and latex gloves. Plus most of the stuff that one keeps in a people first-aid kit.

I'll have to look in my animal first-aid kit for more specifics.

Ok. I have all of those things (we have very good human first aid kits.., my other half teaches medics'/trauma kit classes.), except didn't have the blood stop powder...

Just got off phone with him, he said use flour or cornstarch for now.

Blackie cleaned & resting in house while I run to TSC.

Poor baby. He is staying inside for tonight...:(

This is an awesome idea RaZ...I have all you listed except the "blu-kote and wazine".?...I have corn starch or flour for minor cuts, styptic type powder can have benzocaine in it. Precious Kitty said avoid anything with "caine" in it? I am not knowledgeable on this, so I appreciate any talk about the good kit to have for our new flock.

and 4 mastiffs....

Wow, you really must go through the dog food!
. Also check out Hillbilly Hens hoop run. I wish I had one because it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. In the winter the birds have dry sand and the snow slides right off. Nice job!

Thanks John! It's a shame that it's not being used now. We thought about putting in a cement floor and using it as a dog kennel.
I really liked it in the winter because it gave extra room for the birds if they didn't want to walk in the snow.

Too bad about Blackie, I am sure he will be fine. If I remember correctly anything that has "cain" is poison to the birds.

Well THAT was a waste of 2 hours of my life.

Normally should be a 45min RT to TSC; between construction & an accident TWO hours. THEN, TSC was OUT of blood stop powder!!!!!

Pet supplies Plus had some quick Blood Stopper powder for dogs, cats & birds. Luckily I read the package the guy suggested on the first one as it contained benzocaine ....

And, yes, it has been in several threads, forums, etc., that I read that "....caine" can be toxic to chickens

AND to make it all worse..I AM starving & didn't get to stop by Cold Stone Creamery on my way home due to the detour to Pet Supplies Plus.

Think I will wait til honey gets home to finish fixing up Blackie. Will be easier with two of us. He's resting nicely & being VERY vocal with his displeasure at the moment (crowing) :D

Won't flour or cornstarch help in a pinch?

I had a DR tell me once that meds with caines in them were not that good for humans either!

What about CVS pharmacy? Ingredients: Hydrophilic Polymer and Potassium Ferrate.

I did use cornstarch on him before I started my "two hour tour"!!

I just transferred him to nice big dog crate with food & water with a bit of electrolyte in it. Appears bleeding has stopped. But I know it will just start again if I don't keep him isolated & out of coop/yard for a day or 2.

I have had some Easy Mac...all is good in the world. Except I am still out of ice cream! :(

Candy/RaZ..
I agree us "newbies" would benefit from a rehash of a good chicken first aid kit.

I had done some research & do have one. Found lots of info here & found a pretty good one on the Chicken Chicks blog.

What do I have ?

-- Blu-Kote (antiseptic/wound dressing PLUS the Blu "hides" the blood to prevent others from picking on injured baby AND, if u spill it on yourself you look like a Smurf...yes, experience !)
--Poultry dust for mites, lice, etc.
--VetRx: colds, roul, scaly legs & "eye worm"
--Vitamin & Electrolyte (picked up when it was so hot)
--Eye droppers/syringes (for "force" feeding)
--Wazine (just picked up; for round worms; thanks, RaZ)

The other stuff like latex gloves, butterflies, gauze, clippers, Neosporin, etc., always have available for our trauma kits.
(Need latex gloves when I am dealing with my hot peppers from the garden too, so get those by the 100's!!)

Would really love suggestions on other items to round out the kit....:)
