Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

A couple of non-standard things that I keep on hand:

Superglue - quick wound closure
Rubber cement - I've used it on myself to close a wound but hurt when peeled off. May not be good on critters.
Skin-so-soft - Mosquito and fly repellent.
Petroleum jelly - leg mites
Honey - good for burns and abrasions.

These are home remedies and should not be construed as veterinary advice.
I hope a real vet or tech will weigh in with some recommendations.

ETA:
Everyone should also have a fire extinguisher handy and an emergency plan for humans and animals that are under your care.

Hey Silly, How is that phoenix roo looking? I am VERY curious!
Here they are!
It looks like the primary tail feathers are black, but the saddle feathers are going to be quite pretty...
see close up below. He will be a handsome fellow! The hens tail is also looking nice.

Candy/RaZ..
I agree us "newbies" would benefit from a rehash of a good chicken first aid kit.

I had done some research & do have one. Found lots of info here & found a pretty good one on the Chicken Chicks blog.

What do I have ?

-- Blu-Kote (antiseptic/wound dressing PLUS the Blu "hides" the blood to prevent others from picking on injured baby AND, if u spill it on yourself you look like a Smurf...yes, experience !)
--Poultry dust for mites, lice, etc.
--VetRx: colds, roul, scaly legs & "eye worm"
--Vitamin & Electrolyte (picked up when it was so hot)
--Eye droppers/syringes (for "force" feeding)
--Wazine (just picked up; for round worms; thanks, RaZ)

The other stuff like latex gloves, butterflies, gauze, clippers, Neosporin, etc., always have available for our trauma kits.
(Need latex gloves when I am dealing with my hot peppers from the garden too, so get those by the 100's!!)

Would really love suggestions on other items to round out the kit....

Ok, newb question! How can you tell if your chickens have worms? and do you worm them as a matter of principle or wait until there are symptoms? Also the same question about mites/lice, do you wait until symptoms or dust during the bad season?

So far, my chickens seem to be fine, I don't dissect their poo and do not see any obvious worms in there....but still! Want to make sure I am on top of taking care of my birds :)

RaZ, good to remind us to have that fire extinguisher. I understand that everyone is being helpful and not vet's. Actually, I prefer "home remedies" and natural intervention as much as possible.

Thanks to you both!

Candy,
That's a good question, I have wondered the same thing, but have been assuming for the worms, one would treat only as needed.

Like you, I like to stay with as natural of remedies as possible, so don't want to medicate unless needed

I have often wondered what different droppings "mean". As a newbie I tend to worry any time something doesn't look normal. I just didn't realize how many "normals" there were. When In doubt I reference the below link. I know I have seen a similar one somewhere here on BYC.
