Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

We tried that last year, but the only place we can run an extension cord from is the garage, and doing that would put the extension cord right over our gravel driveway. So if anyone were to drive over the cord, it would shred it. We thought of burying it, but we rent our property and I don't think our landlord would be very happy if we dug up the driveway.
PVC pipe. Run the extension cord through PVC. If your drive is gravel, you can trench it in, or run 2x4's on either side of it tire weight is taken on the 2x4, not the pvc. Of course, you could run it through the metal pipe too, bit more expensive, but a car isn't going to break that. I don't have electric either. I run my cord along the top of the fence, then over to the coop leaving just enough head room.

Welcome!

Kimmie... you can't post a pic like that and leave us hanging! I am sure you were probably in a hurry, and prayers for your family, I am sure they are in need right now. Get back to us soon though!

Hi Forum!

I am brand new here, my first post! I am moving back to the great state of Michigan (YES!) and will be doing a backyard homestead of sorts on 10 acres in Oceloa Twp. Is there anyone here that is in that area? I've talked to 2 Twp Officials and they are contradict each other as to whether or not I could have chickens. Basically it was decided that if I get a complaint, the chickens or whatever else I have would be taken immediately. Not cool considering I bought 10 acres as it qualifies as farmland.

So... my once dream property seems to be limited. Has anyone else dealt with hostility about backyard homesteading or chicken raising?
Welcome to BYC. What is the land zoned as? I believe it would be illegal to confiscate any animals owned by you on the basis of an unsubstantiated complaint. Which doesn't mean that you wouldn't possibly incur legal problems. But I would get a copy of the the ordinances for where your land is and also what it is zoned as. It could also make a difference if there are "livestock" on the land right now. Good luck either way
our 2 new gils : an americauna & a chanticler (thanks mary :) )
Very pretty. If you have coons, please put them in a safe pen overnight. Coons will pull parts of them through the wire and eat them.

I had left my phone in my truck to charge while I was at work, so I got quite a bit of messages, my dad had sent some of them. This is what he sent me-

(The owner of the land next to us had sent it to him, and my dad forwarded it to me)

Here is what my realtor told me yesterday. He brought a buyer to look at my land. As they walked the field in the back they saw some white fencing. Then they saw a large cow looking at them. It snorted came to the fence looked at it and broke through and charged them. They ran into the woods got cut up and bruised while the must be bull circled in the ravine. They ran for the barn. The ad says come walk the property any time. I don't won't pay for a liability suit for that type thing. Call or text me to let me know how this won't happen again.

Ok, well as I was thinking, is he talking about my tame and spoiled cows? So, texted my dad asking if he was referring to my cows. He said yes, and the owner is upset. November the sweet and stoopid steer WAS out yesterday. I had to get Jade my dog to help me get him back into the pasture, Jade found him in the ravine. He must have wanted snacks and pettings from the realtor and the buyer, that is how spoiled he is! Plus I have seen him jump over the hot fence without touching it. I did not know that those people were over yesterday, if I had seen them running away from November, I would have been laughing too hard to help. Well, at least the buyer might not come back. Hopefully.

Kimmie, Hope that no one was hurt!

Bella my cow is going to have a calf any day now she is getting ready!!

they are in a pen inside our polebarn - just let them outside for a couple hours today to freerange + fresh air on such a nice day as today - cant let them run around the yard freely during a month long quarrentine - they were at the back of our property, while our other birds out front - just to make sure no diseases intermingle. all 9 of them look pretty healthy, but not taking any chances

Going to be taking a break from BYC for a while. It will be just a temporary break and I will be back. Just in need of more time for work, school, reading books, and enjoying the outdoors. Hope you all have a great finish to summer!

Think you should put up a double line of fence there Farmerboy... Better to be safe than sorry having new neighbors shoot your cow because they don't realise he's a big baby.

The fence he is in is just one strand of horse tape. He is the only one that have been getting out. I may add a thin strand to that fence. Maybelle have been staying in. But I had moved Bella to a different pasture with 2 thin strands closer to the house so I can keep a better eye on her, she is in the same pasture with the goats and the Jersey steers.

Her belly is much bigger than what she was carrying for Maybelle, as Maybelle's sire was a Lowline. But this calf's sire is a Guernsey, so the calf will be a bit bigger. I hope its a heifer! Stay tune!

Please, please post baby pix!

I love every spring when farmer's cows next door (Angus) & across street have their babies. This year next door, there were 6 & I just LOVE watching them play :D

Across street longhorns & dairy....(at least that is what this city girl thinks they are!).

Oh Tap, forgot to ask how those phoenix are doing? Don't worry, I will not be offended if you re-homed them.

We still have Jack and Jill. They were put in with the meat birds and bantams but have remained very aloof from them. They totally do their own thing even though they are in the flock. I would re-home if I find them a good home not because I don't like them but rather because I'm not sure his tail will survive the other roosters here.
Traprock: love you frizzle boy. Do you ever have hatching eggs or chicks?
I am not 100% on what sex they are yet. Out of the six young ones I have no one has laid an egg or crowed yet. I may in the future depending on how they all sort out. These guys came as eggs from 1muttsfan before she sold her cochins.
