Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

My pullets are 24 weeks now (isa brown=12 buff orpington = 7 hens) 5 "hens" turned out to be roos...
We are up to 15 eggs a day now. The buff eggs are so tiny! The production has not gone down with the decreased day light, but I think they are so new to laying that the amount of light hasn't effected them yet?

I got one egg yesterday.... I have 29 chickens. I do not add light during the winter. As most of us know, the chicken is born with the number of eggs she will lay over her lifetime. So, if we add light, she'll just stop laying earlier.

My brother called me last night to inform me that the attorney that handled my mother's estate was arrested for embezzlement! This could be interesting. There was so much drama for two years as we fought with the executor of the will. So, here we go again.

Got to go and take care of my chickens....

unbelievable you spend the $$ to make a will and still have problems

winter run question?? what do you put on the ground in your covered winter run? leaves, straw, wood shavings? my run is dirt but I like to through something else in there once I put the cover on as they do not like to go in the snow I have used leaves and hey, leaves had less pack down by spring (I think) thought this yr I may use a combo of all three, gettig the fine wood shavings trom TSC

FYI.....I have discovered feed prices can vary as much as $1 a bag at different TSC's Cedar Springs is a dollar cheaper then Lowell

I dont feel so bad now.. 1 egg out of 29.. thats worse then mine.. sorry

keep us posted on the embezzler.. should be interesting.. maybe youll have some money coming in..

snowflake, you can use leaves, straw, wood shavings i have used them all.. and it all gets composted down to nothing. I do deep litter in coops for the winter months and just keep adding.. not sure how it will work this year.. i have alot more chickens.

The Delawares are gorgeous! I posted a pic of them a few pages back Naglady! They are younger than my birds, though...I heard they produce jumbo eggs. My girls are three Red sex links and two EE's I am getting medium size seafoam green eggs from both EE's and large/xlarge eggs from the Reds. Usually 3-4 a day, two brown, two green :) I made deviled eggs out of the green ones for a family get together and they were cute bite sized portions! Very good and everyone commented on how nice and orange the yolk color was even after mayo was mixed in. Yummy!
BTW is it just me, or are fresh eggs harder to peel than store ones? I had a heck of a time so any tips out there???

If you go to fresheggsdaily.com, there's a recipe to steam ur eggs for hard boiled. Says it works and the peeling is easy even on eggs laid same day. I have it printed out and need to try it.
