So, is Halloween your favorite "holiday"??

If I celebrated holidays as such, yeah it probably would be. It's more an obsession with history and culture though.

The REALLY COOL thing about the old mental hospital is that they've renovated a couple of them and now have things such as restaurants, art shows, and an indoor farmers market there! Building 50 is way awesome. I know from time to time they do guided tours as well.

Peak color week up here too. It's supposed to rain Tuesday-Sunday, so we'll probably lose a LOT of leaves in a short amount of time.

Yep! I thought of you as we drove by your county, waved. We didn't know about the tours beforehand so we'll have to go back sometime. I would love to see more of it and the tunnels!

This is the chicken I got a new egg from today, I was told it was a buff orphington, but pics I see, don't really look like her. Does anyone know what she is? My boys named her Buff, she's gigantic. I've had her 2 mos. and she is still very skitish, but very docile.

She also laid a white small to medium egg the other day, none since. Pale legs and 4 toes. Very soft and fluffy There is a few black streaks around her neck and 1 black streak on her tail, other than that, just beautiful white. Sry for blurry pic.

An old friend of mine was an orderly at the mental hospital in TC for many years. It was closed, along with others in the state, when it became both politically incorrect and more costly to institutionalize mental patients. I asked him one time what happened to all the people who lived there when the place was closed. He said, "The state relocated them. Now they live under bridges or they are dead". Very sad - he saw obituaries on a regular basis for those he helped care for who had been released when the hospital closed.

The TC hospital had a farm associated with it, they kept dairy cows and chickens and had a large garden. Last time I was there (many years ago) the old barn was still there.

Very like a Delaware, what size egg, and color? The Delaware lay a light brown, almost creamish coffee colored. Her coloring is very much Delaware. What would you put her size at? Over five lbs? Thats about it on the average Delaware, an ocasional larger one.

Goodness gracious ghost peppers are wicked! Made the pepper from the dehydrated ones outside & I am STILL sneezing w/burning nose. Makes my habaneros seem tame...

Think I will skip the latest named "hottest pepper in the world" -- "Trinidad Scorpion". Apparently it is twice the scoville units of the ghost. Boss will be happy tomorrow, bringing him ghost, habanero & bird's eye (Thai hot) pepper made after dehydrating them (he provided the ghost).

10 quarts of Venison Vegetable Barley soup almost done processing....

Oh, and....Guess what the brats did. Just went to let them out to free range...they scattered ALL of the straw out of their nest boxes. I JUST put all fresh in last night.....

Kathi, welcome to the site... wish it were under better circumstances. Birds can deal with the temps, but, at night they turn their brains off and so closing/locking doors will always be necessary.
Trap and dispose of what you catch, don't take them somewhere else and release them. Some on here think thats wrong either way, others would agree with me. Do what you feel you need to do to protect your birds.

Cool building, I hate to see any old one like that go to waste so I'm glad they're using it!

Dogs... yeah if you try to rescue them you can get over run pretty quickly. I foster on occasion for Cane Corso rescue, and actually had to turn a person away with a dog that I probably could help.. but he would have been a very bad mix with the 4 I already have... too many dominant dogs here already and too many behavior issues to add more. Once I get my own numbers down I'll open up my home again.
We processed 7 birds Saturday... first one I caught bit me hard, left a bruise on my arm! I didn't feel bad about sending him to freezer camp at all After processing, I like to let the birds sit in the fridge for 3 days before packaging and freezing. We've been canning a lot of chicken and rabbit soup!

We finished the goat shed! Yeah!! Finally! I have a couple minor things to do, like a ladder to get into the loft and I'm thinking about putting up bird netting in the open areas to keep the hay clean. My hens think the loft is a great place to lay eggs, but I don't think they put much thought into whether their chicks would survive the 8 foot drop. Der..

I trimmed all the goat hooves and gave them a good brushing. I'll be moving the buck in with the others next month so he can do his job and I'm not sure if I'll leave him in with the rest of the herd over winter or move him back out. I guess it depends on how much he and the other wethers fight. Any one else with experience in the area I would appreciate some advice. I plan to milk the doe and don't want goaty milk so I was going to move him back out in march.
I will be in the market for another doe in the spring! At some point, I want all the boys in one pen and girls in the other.

I got another coat of paint in the coop yesterday and will do a final coat tonight. Feels good to be getting some of these projects done... seems like they drag on forever and is never ending!

I have two uggo chicks I had hoped would be hens, showing signs of being roos.. If anyone wants an uggo roo, let me know! They are both black and white, one is naked necked, the other fully feathered (feet too) and has a crest..free (in a few weeks) or they will be headed to freezer camp when they mature. I think they will be fairly small as they have some banty in the blood lines.

I think they did the same with the wards at Ypsi State... I don't think the state really did some of these folks any favors other than lessen their longevity.

Been pretty busy the past week or so.. I celebrated my early 50th birthday with family and friends over this past weekend. real birthday is this wednesday..

I am looking to rescue a guinea pig if there is anyone on here that needs to rehome thiers.. just thought i would check here and be able to help someone out..my dd has been wanting one for along time and been doing lots of research on them and surprising her for her birthday present..
