What are the best chickens to get. I really LOVE Cochins what breeds would go best with them
Kind of depends on what your looking for. Do you want meat chickens, large eggs, dual-purpose, show birds, heritage or a mix of everything.

I would agree on going WAY bigger than you think you want. I wish I would have been on this site before i started.

But sure have learned alot from these guys since. Good luck!!!

It was a good day. Lots and lots of leaves were mowed, mulched, collected and composted. The last remnants of the garden were pulled and I found a few ripe tomatoes. Nothing like a snack while doing yardwork.

It was a great day to do garden work yesterday. Got the Brussel Sprouts and the last of the celery harvested, everything raked n burned in the garden and then even got it tilled(while still smoldering a bit)lol. Finished taking bird netting off the runs and got the plastic up around the runs. Glad we had a beautiful day to be outside before we have to hunker down.

And if you are a sky gazer, the Leonid meteor shower is at it's peak tonight.

Last night was rainy all night here. But I was lucky enough to see a pre-Leonid meteor that burned across the sky in a blaze of white light on Friday night. I watch every meteor shower I can (if the weather doesn't prevent it) and I've never seen one so bright!

We have had dramatically reduced gunfire where we rifle hunt this year! Fewer doe tags were issued and we are in the 14 county area that elected to implement the "3 on one side" antler point restriction rule that is in its 10th or so year in leelanau county (which has been the poster child for big deer in this region). I have 2 trips to the field left this weekend before we have to go back home and I'm hoping to make on of them count. I haven't shot a buck in 10 years now, and usually rely on a doe tag to help fill the freezer and I was too late in trying to get one this year....they were sold out when I remembered they were available over the counter.
Yep, same here, never happened before. Next year I'll apply in July to make sure I might get a doe tag for my private land.

It was cloudy here as well. Then a storm rolled through around 4:30 am and woke me up.
I've been up since.
At least I finished the last lecture and am now ready to take my final exam. On-line courses are kind of nifty.

Didn't get the roof finished last night before the rain hit at 7pm, about two rows of shingles to go.

Now they're forecasting the end of the world in severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. It was bad enough I was up there in the dark and driving rain putting up the tarps last night but if we get a good storm, those tarps are toast. I'm trying to take comfort in that if water gets between the felt paper and wood, at least it shouldn't be warm enough to grow much mold, right? Right? Just humor me.

Frostleaf, the best way to know the best place for the coop is to study where the shade is from 11 am to 3pm... in the summer that will be coolest. A roof will give shade but not the true cooling kind. You don't want your girls having heatstroke trying to lay!

Another consideration is moisture... you don't want them in the low wet part either.

Breeds.... there are large and mini cochins. They go broody easily; they are a friendly gentle breed. I had one mini. I am personally fond of easter eggers, the ones i have are treat monsters and odd and funny. Also nice are barred rocks and speckled sussex.. i don't like production reds or rhode island reds... lay tons of eggs but not friendly and were mean to my ee's. Orpingtons are supposed to be friendly too but i got mine from tsc and she bit badly... but i don't think that was typical.

Welcome. :)
