Lady I totally get the Holiday drama with family. Last Christmas there were two near fistfights at my DH's family get together. We always dread his family's holidays. So this Thanksgiving for the first time since we have been married - 19 years- we didn't go!
We talked about the fact we didn't really want to be there and that the only reason we were going was to make his mom happy and to see her. We have always had Thanksgiving on Saturday at our own home so we could do everything else on Thursday. We invited his mom over to see us on Saturday - so far she hasn't responded. Anyway it was not crazy like most years and actually enjoyable! We accepted an invitation to see family from out of state who were around for the day and had a great time. I'm already trying to think of how we can change Christmas. I have come to the conclusion his family will never change or understand our way of life so why try fight it.
Yesterday I finally gathered 4 eggs that survived the cold and dog. I also spent part of the day cleaning coops. It is so much less work when everything is frozen! A few weeks back I had determined my pheasant pen was not sufficient for the winter. I only had 2 pheasants left, both hardy, so I decided to put them in with the chickens knowing they would not likely stay. The male stayed hours and the female a day and then flew off. I felt super irresponsible for letting them go but knowing they would likely escape after the first snow decided I would like them to adjust before the snow. I put their little box out where I knew they were with food in it and worried about them during our recent storm. Now they seem totally at home roaming about. They come daily to eat and check out the chickens. They and the wild rabbits go and eat from their box and they have made themselves at home under one of our large pine trees. I do still worry about the coyotes. I saw fresh tracks yesterday.
